Annabeth POV-Friday, October 6, 2023-1:09 PM-Manhattan
Percy and Annabeth had found out that the old iPods and devices that played music didn't attract many monsters. Only the old ones, though, the ones without much tech in them, and they didn't use them that often.
Laptops, though- Annabeth thought to herself- laptops did.
Annabeth's fingers longed for Daedalus's laptop, the tech that didn't attract monsters. As it is, the laptop she was using now was very high tech- a laptop stolen from a store- which, "We'll return it, Annabeth!" was Percy's idea.
Her fingers flew across the keyboard, and she focused on doing her task a quick as she could- Percy had already had to fight two monsters by this point. A piece of hair fell across her vision, and she tucked it behind her ear. She shifted the laptop on her legs and kept working.
She sat in an alleyway, crisscross applesauce, with the laptop on her lap and Percy guarding the mouth of the alley. "You almost done?" Percy shouted over his shoulder.
"Kind of!" she yelled back.
Annabeth had already hacked into Sally and her Fredrick's phones, leaving them each a message about what had happened, for they surely would be questioned about Percy and Annabeth. Now she was creating new identities for both of them- Mia Packer and Eric Hall. They were from Brooklyn, and both of them were 18 years old. They both had dyslexia, and their birthdays similar to their real ones. She wiped the fingerprints from their old identities and replaced them with other ones, then put their actual fingerprints on their new identities. She did the same with their irises in case someone wanted to identify them by their eyes. She made backstories for them; previous employments, family, past residences.
Next, she gave Mia and Eric driver's licenses and bank accounts. Then she hacked the bank and added money to their accounts- enough money, but not a substantial amount that would cause an investigation.
Annabeth's eyes flitted up to Percy. He was battling a dracaena at the moment, sword to claws and teeth. She set back to her task with renewed vigor and urgency.
She rented out them an apartment in Queens because they had wanted to get away- but not too far away. Annabeth scrolled through a list of schools to enroll them in, and one of them stood out to her; Midtown School of Science and Technology.
It was the perfect cover. Why would someone expect two teenagers with ADHD and dyslexia, who were so close to graduating, to go to an advanced school? They'd have to deal with their dyslexia, and she could help Percy with his schoolwork if he needed it. She looked up at him just as he sliced through a second dracaena.
Right. No time to consult Percy about it. She quickly enrolled them in school.
She ordered the hair dye and colored contacts from the Amazons to be delivered to their new apartment.
She got a confirmation that Eric and Mia had been accepted into Midtown. She went back to the website and paid the required amount. They would be starting on Tuesday.
Annabeth hesitated for a moment before quickly searching up the "Avengers." She watched the loading sign for a few seconds. Her brow furrowed. It was a high-tech computer; why was it taking this long?
The loading sign stopped loading.
Your device is offline.
Annabeth sat back and thought about what she had done. She didn't know if there was anything else, but they could always do it later if they'd forgotten something. But the Avengers-
Someone or something was keeping them in the dark about these so-called heroes. Annabeth was sure of it. She was missing something crucial that had happened to the world- even all of the mortals knew about it- But what was it?
Annabeth hurriedly wiped the computer's memory, shutting it off and standing up. She'd find out whatever it was, but right now, they had to disappear.
Just three stops left.
According to the government, she and Percy had disappeared. Mia and Eric had moved into their new apartment two weeks ago. They just had three more stops to make before Tuesday.
The first, "Percy, come on. We need to go to camp and get some answers."
