"Newt, what are you talking about?" Thomas asks.

"Nothing." Newt says. "Don't worry about it. Let's just find a way to keep you safe."

"Maybe we should just run away." Thomas says, sighing.

"That isn't really a solution." Newt says.

"Sure it is." Thomas says. "If they aren't around, we don't have to deal with them."

Newt sighs. "Tommy, that's not..." He shakes his head. "I dunno."

"Newt?" Thomas says.

"Yeah?" Newt says, turning to face him.

"I think running away is our best option." Thomas says. "Mostly because I don't want to have to pause time anymore."

Newt looks at him. "Tommy, I don't..." He turns away.

"What?" Thomas asks.

"I can't just leave this place." He says. "I've lived here basically my whole life."

"But-" Thomas starts.

Newt shakes his head. "Tommy, I'm not leaving. I can't."

Thomas looks at him, slightly hurt.

Newt meets his gaze. "It isn't that I wouldn't follow you anywhere, because I would, I really would, but I just can't leave."

Thomas bites his lip. "Maybe you should let them take me."

"Thomas, that is the stupidest thing I have ever heard." Newt says. "There is no way in hell I'm letting them touch you."

Thomas smiles at him. "But why?"

"Because, idiot," Newt says. "I care about you."

Thomas looks at him. "I-"

"Shut up." Newt says. "We don't have time for this. We need to come up with a plan."

"But-" Thomas starts.

"No." Newt says. "We can't keep pausing time. Seriously. Let's just come up with a plan."

Thomas looks at him, annoyed. "I don't like you."

"Oh, shut up." Newt says. "You love me."

Thomas chuckles, a slight note of anxiety in there.

"But I'm right. We do need a plan." Newt leans back against the wall.

"I-I know." Thomas says, shifting anxiously.

"Tommy, what is wrong?" Newt asks with a sigh.

"Nothing." Thomas says way too quickly.

"I'm not an idiot, tell me what's wrong." He presses.

Thomas looks at his friend, his only friend. He can't risk losing him. "Nothing." He says, slightly sad.

"Tommy, you can tell me." He says softly.

"No, I can't." Thomas says. "I can think of a plan alone. You can go."

Newt looks at him, hurt. "Tommy, what? I don't want to go. I'm not leaving you to die."

"I wouldn't die." Thomas says.

"You're plans suck." Newt says. "This is why I come up with the plans."

"Newt, I can do it alone." Thomas insists.

"But you don't have to." Newt says, leaning closer, pressing his shoulder against the other boy's.
