That was a dream, it had to be. Magic portals to other worlds aren't real. Neither are these... these monsters he befriended. He's going to wake up in the cave, those berries made him sick. It was just a hallucination.
Right?
Then why is someone knocking on the door? Lar groans and opens his eyes, finding himself on the floor in the room the bartender gave him. It was all real, but how? Was he still hallucinating? Maybe he did stumble upon a town, but it was filled with normal people... he just drank too much. That much was true. Lar's head was pounding. He snaps out of his thoughts as someone knocks on the door again.
"Come in" He groans, Eulalia opens the door with a soft smile on her face.
"Why are you next to the bed?" She giggles
"That's not a bed, that's a coffin" Lar rubs his eyes and waves a hand at the bed
"Ahh, yea. I forgot to explain that part. We have two kinds of coffins in our world. The ones for the dead and the ones we sleep in." She smiles "you can tell which is which because the ones we sleep in come lower on the sides so they're easier to get in and out of."
"Oh, I see." He nods "well, just getting to sleep in a warm room was perfect for me after all this exploring. Which... What is this city called?"
"You are in Mansterdam, this city does not exist in your world."
"What do you mean?" He raises an eyebrow
"Our worlds are almost exact replicas of each other, just with different beings and city names. Mansterdam is north west of what you call Rome. Here it is called Bone."
"Ahhh," Lar nods. "That makes sense. Well, I should go before I get you in more trouble."
"That's probably a good idea, mostly out of worry for you. Darrion probably doesn't want you to return home."
"You got that right" a deep voice growls from behind them.
They both turned around, Darrion was blocking the door.
"If you didn't want me here then why don't you want me to leave?" Lar quickly stands up and steps in front of Eulalia.
"Your kind is incredibly curious. You're going to want to come back and you'll bring your little friends. Next thing I know is our town is overrun by your kind." Darrion snarrles
"Let me go back, please. I won't come looking for the portal again and I won't bring friends. If I do, kill me."
"I'm not wasting my energy arguing with a mortal. Nor am I going through some portal." He clenches his jaw "Let's go, my patience is short."
Eulalia steps out from behind Lar "Fine we'll go with you, but Lar will you help me close this window really fast?"
"Uhh.. sure" Lar hesitantly pulled his eyes away from Darrion meeting eyes with Eulalia.
"I'll cover for you" She whispered quickly,
Without thinking Lar ran. Smashing through the window, he hit the ground and looked back up. Darrion came crashing through the window as well. Lar rolled out of the way and scrambled to his feet. He broke into a sprint in a direction? He had no idea where the portal was, there was no time to worry about that though. He just needed to stay a safe distance from Darrion.
Darrion was on Lar's trail and gaining quickly. Something Eulalia forgot to explain was Fae are incredibly fast, with incredible reflexes and senses too. If the creatures had to be ranked by their powers, first would be Gods and Goddesses and second would be the pure blood fae. That's why they're sent to watch over the land for the Zues.
Eulalia burst out the main doors of the tavern. "Lar! This way!" She yells
Lar looked over his shoulder and saw Eulalia motioning towards the edge of the city. The portal. He slid to a stop and started sprinting in the direction of the portal. Darrion jumped to tackle Lar but missed from Lar's change in direction. Darrion quickly rolled back onto his feet, running after him. If Darrion even got a finger on Lar it was game over, he just had to stay out of reach. How? Darrion was so much faster.
"Close the portal!" Eulalia yells to her mentor, her mentor looks over and makes eye contact with Lar. He nods and starts to close the portal.
Great, now Lar just had to out run Darrion and make it through the portal before it closes. Thanks Eulalia. However, it's a good move on her end, if Lar were to make it, it would save her mentor from more extreme punishment. All Lar could see was the portal, everything else was just blure. He didn't have time to worry about the books he asked for. He started to panic as the sound of crunching dirt got louder. He wasn't going to make it, Darrion was too fast. All hope was lost. Lar slowed his pace accepting his fate.
The sound of someone sliding across dirt filled the air. Lar looked over his shoulder and saw the demi-fae from last night cutting Darrion off. Lar broke into a sprint again. Why was she helping him escape? There was no time to worry about that right now. He couldn't put the demi-fae's generosity to waste. As he was running a huge wave of force threw him forward. Lar hit the ground and rolled, he looked up and saw the demi-fae on the ground and Darrion barreling toward him. Lar gets to his feet and continues running. The portal was right there, he could make it. The lead he got on Darrion really helped. Lar jumped, his hand made it through the portal, bringing the rest of his body with him. He hit the ground and rolled.
Back in the familiar forest, he made it. He was back in his world. He got up and looked around, Darrion didn't make it. Hopefully he went easy on that other Fae and Eulalia. He sadly didn't get those books he was hoping for. Lar made his way back to the cave he left his stuff in, he rounded the corner into the cave. Sitting there along the wall were multiple stacks of books. Someone last night came through the portal and left the books he requested here. He smiled softly to himself.
"Thank you Eulalia," He said to himself.
There was no way he could bring these all back to Rome. After packing up his stuff and pondering, Lar decided to leave the books here. He ended up going back home to Rome and telling the story of what happened, no one believed him but it became quite the popular story. It spread all across Rome and other stories that others came up with started to spread around as well. Or at least it's assumed they were made up stories. Who knows?
After telling his stories and knowledge, Lar gathered a team. Together they traveled back to that cave and started a city. They called it Amsterdam, like Mansterdam. Lar could never find the portal again but he started the city in hopes that one day someone would be able to find it again, check on Eulalia. They sacrificed so much for him and he's not even from their world. His world could learn so much from theirs, but the portal was closed. Maybe one day the world's will fuse. Maybe one day balance and peace can be found.
