Chapter3- Clumsy but Changing

Avneet POV

I simply stare at the yellow dense lassi running down my dress. My dress is ruint!

I look up at the person who bumped into me, a boy wearing a maroon kurta, a little taller than I and probably a few years older too.

I stare him straight in the eye and grit my teeth.

Some people around us stop and look in my direction. HoW eMbArAsInG.

I let out a deep breath and throw my hands in the air.

Avu: (trying to be calm) It's ok. It's alright! Totally alright. (telling herself again and again)

Boy: I am incredibly sorry. I didn't see where I was going.

Avu: (internal sobbing) It's ruint!

I get sentimental about things like this. It's kinda just my thing. I wanna break down and cry but that's when someone walks up to me and takes my hand.

Girl: (to the boy) look what you've done, Abhishek!

Boy: oh please, it was a mistake.

The girl takes me away from the crowd and pulls me into a house.

Girl: I'm Vaiahnavi, but you can call me Vai. Excuse my boyfriend, he's a bit of a pain.

Biy: (who had been following them) I am not.

Vai: I think I'll have extra clothes that would fit you.

Avu: oh, that's great. I'm Avneet by the way. Avneet Kaur.

(Vai smiles and walks into a room, Abhi and Avu follow)

This must be the groom's house?... well I wouldn't know.

Before entering I can already hear frequent chatter and laughter from inside.

I walk in, and to my surprise there's the two people I've been searching for for the last 3 hours- my parents!

My mom and another lady laugh on the couch while my dad enjoys a glass of something alcoholic with a few people. They were here this whole time!

My mom notices me.

Mother: Avneet! there you are... Meeta, meet my daughter, Avneet.

Avu: (fake smiles) hi.

Mother: (noticing her dress) haii, what have you done to your dress?!

Vai: It's alright, I'm sure I can give her something.

(Avu's mother nods and Vai takes her to the next room)

The adjoining rook must be Vai's. There's a closet on one side, a desk and on the need there's a boy sitting and rambling along with some dry flowers which are on the mala on his neck.

I smile upon recognition.

Avu: (in a childish tone) You! You're Siddharth the desi boy!

(Vai and Abhi burst out laughing behind me)

Siddharth shoots me an annoyed look.

Sid: Just Siddharth will do. (taking the malas off his head and throwing them on the bed)

Sid: (to Abhishek who sits down next to him) Why doesn't anyone call you- 'Abhishek the desi boy'?!

Abhi: (sarcastically) maybe it's because I don't smell like incense sticks, bRoThEr.

Avu: (kinda surprised) whoa, you both are brothers?!

Abhi: yep. I know nobody would believe that someone as hot as me could be this fellow's brother.

Avu: no. It's nothing to do with looks... it's just, I expect you to look more... um... desi.

(Sid straight up glares at Avneet and she shrugs)

(Vai walks out of the closet)

Vai: (handing her a set of pajamas) I think these will fit you.

Avu: (taking them) thanks... Where can I change?

Vai: (pointing to a door) there's the restroom.

I nod and walk in.

It's a nice bathroom. Sooo many soaps. I start smelling them.

After smelling all the soaps I realize that this isn't my house, so I start hurrying up.

That's when more problems begin.

First, with the zip on my back which just refuses to unzip! I pull at it a lot till it finally gives way and I stumble down to the ground, taking a rack of soaps down with me.

After managing to take the dress off and putting on the pajamas I decide to clean off the makeup, so I wash my face. That's when the next catastrophe occurs.

I get soap in my eye.

Naturally I scream and panic from the burning sensation.

I can't see where I'm stepping and slip on a soap bar which must've been on the ground and I fall backwards with a thud.

Ouuuch! That definitely hUrt!

I hear someone bang on the door.

Getting up on my feet)

Vai: Avu! You alright!?

Avu: (as the pain subsides) I'm fine.

Eventually I get up and rinse off my face with cold water, put all the soaps back on the rack and dust myself off.

I walk out of the bathroom to find just Siddharth lying on the bed, counting something on the ceiling.

Avu: where's everyone else?

Sid: (noticing her) ahh, Vai and Abhi are in the next room with the parents.

Avu: (sitting up on the bed) and why aren't you there?

Sid: (shrugs) just like to avoid conversations about myself.

Avu: how do you know they'll talk about you?

Sid: cuz I'm unmarried and don't have a girlfriend. I'm the perfect topic.

Avu: Wait... but what about your Priya?

Sid: (going a bit pale) my Priya? I Hate that girl! And besides, till yesterday I thought she was my cousin or something!

Avu: (laughs)

Vai and Abhi walk in with a few parts of samosas and cups of Chai.

Avu: oh yay! I've been craving samosas for awhile now. (takes a plate)

Abhi: (to Avu) you planning to stay tonight?

Avu: I dunno. It's up to my mom.

Sid: What about us? Are we staying here?

Avu: don't you guys live here?

Abhi: It's our aunts house. And yes and no. You're staying here tonight. I'm going and staying over with Vai.

Sid: (sighing) the younger one is always the unfortunate one.

Avu: I would disagree.
