Marie sent the boys into the dining room so they could eat their lunch I had made and so she could discuss the circumstances with Kyle and I. She gave us their medical details, passports, all the forms we needed and made us sign a few documents. Two hours later, she was gone. And she hadn't given any details as to why my sister was put in a mental institute.
We spent the afternoon getting to know our nephews, playing with toys and watching TV. I thought that maybe I was wrong about them, maybe they were normal children that had just had a tough life so far and needed to learn how to be a child. Despite all of this though, I was still worried about the first night as Kyle had to leave for work and I would be home alone with the children.
During dinner, Kyle tried to make conversation with the boys, however they didn't answer and they didn't seem too keen on their food. We thought nothing of it, they were probably tired.
Kyle put the boys to bed whilst I did the washing up. Even though we were very fortunate money-wise as Kyle had a well-paid job, we still only lived in a fairly compact 2-bedroom apartment. That meant Nathaniel and Micah had to share a bedroom, but we spent hours decorating it and picking out the best furniture. They had a bunk bed and the walls were painted with a jungle green and decorated with animal stickers. We really made an effort, as back at home the boys would have never had their own bedroom or even seen colour.
"I've gotta leave for work now," Kyle said after tiptoeing down the stairs. I turned to face him then quickly dried my hands. "Good luck," he sighed, before kissing me and heading out the door.
Maybe I can have some time to relax, I thought. I dried all of the cutlery then made myself a cup of coffee. I sat down on the sofa after turning the TV on and flicked through the channels before selecting a gardening programme. I dimmed the lights and decided to catch up on work. As I worked as a florist, my life revolved around flowers and taking orders for bouquets. But I never complained.
