"Are you boys alright?" I coughed, trying to get my natural voice back. They didn't answer, instead staring intently at me, "D-Did you have a bad dream?" No reply. I noticed that they were holding hands, silent. I opened my mouth to say something as I realised this but fear got the better of me and I thought it would be best if I stayed quiet. "Come on, let's go back to bed," I changed the subject. I held my hand out to lead them upstairs, but they were ignoring me, stuck in a trance. I scrunched my hand into a fist and pulled it back to my side. I didn't know what to do, should I just leave them? Should I carry them to bed? My head was jumbled with so many options on what to do, but there was no need for a solution. Micah, the younger child, bowed his head down before revealing my phone was hidden behind my back. His head rose up, revealing the sinister smile from earlier. He beckoned for me to retrieve my phone and I cautiously did so, not losing eye contact with him. "Th-Thank you, M-Micah," I stuttered, confused and slightly scared. I watched as the boys turned around, still holding hands, and slowly leaving the room. My mouth gaped open, watching as the two young boys headed back upstairs to bed. I waited till I heard them tread the final step of the stairs before dialling Kyle's number. My hands were shaking again and I just wanted Kyle to be home.
Four rings in, Kyle picked up. "Kyle?" I whispered.
"Tess? Are you okay? Why are you ringing me so late?"
"I'm sorry, I know you're working but it's just the boys,"
"Has something happened to them? Let me grab my coat, I'm on my way-"
"No, Kyle," I realised it was stupid to get him worried over something so small, "You know what, it's fine. I'm just tired and, yeah, everything's okay,"
"Tessa..."
"Everything's fine! I can't wait for you to be home," I ended the call and headed upstairs to bed, making sure I locked the door.
