Chapter Seven - Leaving it Behind

You wake up to Steve shaking you gently, "hey."

"Huh?" You look at him, then at the dark windows. "What time is it?"

"Its early." You see he's already dressed and his shield is leaning on the wall across the room.

"What's going on?" You sit up and look around. "Do I need to get up and get dressed?"

"No, I just wanted to tell you Fury's calling me in for something so I gotta go." He leans in and kisses your forehead. "I set up a pot of coffee for you, you just have to start it." He picks up your hand in his and kisses your fingers, then turns and grabs his shield. "See you later."

"Bye," you watch him as he steps out of the room. You turn and grab your phone to look at the time. 3:45?! What the hell Fury?! You roll over and get re-positioned in your bed. At least its him and not me.

(Bucky's POV)

I wake up to the sound of my phone buzzing and a sharp beeping. "Ugh..." I grab it to shut it off thinking it's some kind of amber alert or severe storm warning, but I notice it's a call from the HQ. What the hell is this shit... "Hello?" I grumble into the phone, rubbing my eyes and sitting up.

"Hey Buck, it's Steve."

"Oh," I glance at the clock. "Hey I thought you'd be Fury. What's up?"

"I'm calling from headquarters, I got called into a mission and..." He takes in a breath. "It's Zemo, we got an anonymous tip that he was behind the original abduction and his men are after Y/n."

My stomach drops. "What?? Why??"

"I don't know, we didn't get any more details."

My heart starts racing. Before I know it I'm on my feet and pacing the room, my mind trying to figure out a way to help.

"Listen, I need you to take her somewhere."

My pacing stops. "What?"

"Fury's got it all set up; apparently its a bunker somewhere, he won't tell me where for safety reasons but he said he's gonna pass the coordinates to you."

I start grinding my teeth nervously, scratching the back of my head. "Why aren't you taking her?" 

"I asked if I could, but they need me here. Plus they'll expect us to send her with me, it's gotta be someone else. And I trust you."

I trust you. It felt like a punch in the gut. This is a bad idea, it should be someone else. But I realize Steve wouldn't just send his wife off in a bunker if this wasn't serious, he's probably asking me to do this for a reason. "She's in real danger isn't she?"

Steve sighs heavily, "yeah, she is." I can't see his face, but I don't have to. I know he's scared.

I've gotta help her. "Yeah okay, I'll do it."

"Thanks Buck, I really appreciate this." There's a few beeping sounds before Steve speaks again. "Okay, Fury is gonna pass on the coordinates and a few instructions in a sec. You need anything else?"

"Uh I don't think so."

"Okay. Thanks so much."

I crack a half smile. "No problem buddy."

"Hey one more thing," Steve quickly chimes in before I hang up. "Just... Yesterday I really tried to make a connection with her. I went makeup shopping with her."

I laugh, "you? Makeup shopping?"

Steve laughs too. "Yeah! And it was actually so fun! It just made me realize..." he sighs and I can hear the discomfort in his voice. "... it made me realize I really should be spending time with her. Like actually spending time. So can you just tell her that in the future I'm going to be making an effort."
