❛ i thought i'd spend some time
with my best friend instead. ❜—
"hey loser, guess who?"
a familiar pair of hands covered park miyong's eyes, causing a small smile to appear on her face. the sound of the familiar voice melted her heart instantly.
it was a sunny and bright friday afternoon, and miyong was just sitting right outside of the school campus on a bench, waiting for a particular someone.
taking the two hands off of her face, miyong turned around only to meet the eyes of her one and only, best friend, mark lee.
"hey mark, how was your day?" miyong asked slightly smiling, as she continued to look directly into his mocha-coloured eyes.
mark smiled. "it was okay i guess," he said shrugging looking into the distance, "professor min's class was pretty boring..."
mark squinted at the sun, the light shone on his face, making it look like he was glowing.
miyong's heart fluttered. her face remained the same, but a pink blush crept up her ears — thank goodness she had decided to wear her hair down that day.
he was the mark lee, the school's renowned playboy— the one senior who was known for dating a new girl every few weeks or so. the one with a charming smile, attractive physique, and irresistible eyes. the one all the girls fell head over heels for.
and miyong was no exception.
"the weather is so nice today, wow." mark grinned, showing off a row of pearly whites that resided in his clear-cut jaw.
he then turned back, looking into miyong's eyes once again, and continued to talk about some new basketball skill he had just learned — miyong wasn't really paying attention to what he was saying, as she was way too distracted admiring his features.
miyong had promised herself she would never fall for him.
she swore she never would.
but she did.
and hard.
she didn't know how, or why she fell, but she would never admit she did.
she was park miyong.
she was supposed to be strong. she was supposed to be independent. she was supposed to always remain calm and composed.
she wasn't supposed to fall for anyone.
miyong told herself she would never admit having feelings towards her best friend — as it wasn't a common sort of thing.
it probably would seem kind of weird.
especially when almost every other girl in existence also wanted to fight for his attention.
she wasn't even going to try.
clearing the thoughts spinning through her head, miyong sighed and turned her attention back towards the happy babbling boy in front of her.
"...and so yeah, that happened. but more importantly, how was my amazingly perfect best friend's day?" mark asked, now sitting down beside miyong on the bench. he placed his elbows on his knees, with his face resting in the palms of his hands, eyes gazing into hers.
best friend...
that's all i would ever be, miyong thought, trying to hide the disappointment on her face.
she was park miyong. she wouldn't dare expose her true emotions.
since the day the two met — back when they were only seven years old — they had been inseparable. or in other words, the best of friends.
now ten years later, they were both seventeen, both seniors attending seoul high, and both still the best of friends.
mark was the school's 'it' boy, but unlike others, in miyong's eyes, all she saw in him was a happy, caring, adventurous boy — the same boy she had met for the first time when she was seven years old.
"i'm tired and bored, but i'm glad to see you." miyong replied sighing suppressing her thoughts. "whe— where's your girlfriend?" she asked mark, surprised that there wasn't a girl clinging to his arm like there usually would be.
the girls mark would usually have around him came in a variety. he was a playboy. tugging on the heartstrings of everyone. flirting every opportunity he got.
who wouldn't love mark lee?
he was good-looking beyond measure, an ace in athletics, and not to mention his high above-average grades.
girls would always have their hands all over him, playing with his soft hair, holding his hand, kissing him. and he always let them.
miyong's heart chipped a little each time she saw, but buried it all beneath her skin— as she only wanted what was best for mark.
she'd never admit it, but she was definitely jealous. jealous, but she'd never show it. she cared too much for mark to mess anything up for him.
"i don't know. i don't really care either. i thought i'd spend some time with my best friend instead." he shrugged, nonchalantly.
the butterflies in miyong's stomach flipped and fluttered.
"you seem sad though..." mark said putting a hand on his chin as he thought, thinking of a way to possibly cheer up his best friend.
being best friends with miyong for years, mark could tell what his best friend was feeling— even when she tried to hide it. miyong never understood how he knew, but he just always knew.
from the way her eyebrows slightly creased, he could tell something was wrong. it was a habit of hers.
"i'm— i'm fine, mark. really." miyong answered, biting her bottom lip.
"hmm..." mark thought, placing a hand on his chin. "what if i came over? we can just chill, play video games, watch a movie or something." mark suggested.
miyong smiled at the thought of it, but frowned as she remembered the mountain of homework that awaited her.
"c'mon mimi, it's friday you can leave your homework until tomorrow. i'll even come over and help you." mark pleaded with his big puppy dog eyes, reading her mind.
mimi.
his nickname for her.
and only him.
he had given the nickname to her the first day they met, and it still stuck with them ten years later.
the way mark looked at her, softened miyong's heart and she couldn't help but give in to her best friend.
best friend things, i guess.
"okay fine you idiot, let's go." miyong smiled rolling her eyes.
mark cheered and grabbed his best friend's hand, intertwining their fingers together— failing to acknowledge the effect that his simple action had on her.
