"You came at a bad time, Nathan," Madi said apologetically, fiddling with the ring on her finger and smiling. "Connor has a big meeting tonight. He's not coming home until late."
Nathan nodded like he knew this would happen, which he probably did. Lizzie wondered idly if Connor was actually attending a work meeting, and was disgusted at the images her mind produced. "I know. I came here to talk to you. Well, we came here to talk to you. Lizzie needs to... tell you something." Madi's smile dimmed a notch as she caught the tone of his voice.
"What kind of thing do you need to tell me?" She asked Lizzie, her eyes wary and curious at the same time. "Is this about your car, Nathan?"
Nathan clenched his fist and Lizzie worked her fingers to uncurl it. There was no way she was allowing his anger to overtake him again. "Partially. There's a lot she - well, we, need to tell you." He let out a breath and relaxed his fist. "First of all, you should explain to me what happened with my car. Please."
Madi suddenly looked utterly perplexed. "What do you mean? Didn't Connor tell you?"
"I haven't talked to Connor in months. It's not possible he told me anything, especially regarding my car," Nathan growled through his teeth, and Lizzie watched Madi's eyes widen and her mouth pop open in shock.
"You're his best friend, that's impossible! He's spent more time with you the last few months even than he usually does. I can't believe that he didn't tell you about the car." His hands had moved, slowly clenching and unclenching in her lap.
"Madi, I need you to believe me when I tell you this. I haven't spoken to Connor in a long time, and it is by choice. If he told you he talked to me about my car, it's bullshit." Madi glared at him and he muttered 'bullcrap' under his breath, which made Lizzie want to laugh. "I don't let anyone but me drive my car, you know that. The only reason Connor got to drive it that one time was because he jacked my keys and stole my car for the day. This is a completely different situation. What happened to my car?"
"I'll explain. I have no idea what's going on, though, and you two really need to let me in on the details, because this is extremely frustrating. I'll explain the car issue and then you tell me what's going on, yeah?" Madi said sternly.
"That's exactly why we're here," Nathan said grimly, and Madi stopped smiling altogether. Apparently she was able to recognize Nathan's facial expressions as well; specifically which ones screamed bad news. Was it sad that she was jealous that this woman knew him so well?
"I don't understand what the big deal is, Connor said you guys worked it out and you were getting a new car soon-" Nathan growled low in his throat and Madi's eyes got dark and her mouth set itself in a hard line. "I knew it sounded suspicious." Nathan nodded shortly and inclined his head for her to continue. "Nathan, I'm sorry to say this, but it seems that Connor has sold your car."
Nathan flew off the couch and began pacing the room. "What? Who the fuck did he sell it to?"
"Language, Nathan!" Lizzie and Madi snapped simultaneously, and smiled slightly at each other. Nathan whirled around to glare at them.
"Excuse me, ladies, but you'd be swearing too if you heard that your most prized possession had been sold by someone you formerly considered your best friend. I believe I have a very valid excuse to curse, thank you very much," he spit out, his eyes angry storm gray. He began to pace again. "Explain, Madi. Who'd he sell it to? How much? How the hell did he sell it without the papers and my signature, or at least my consent? That's completely illegal!"
