Lizzie walked into the ballroom arm-in-arm with Kaylie at half past eight o’clock, wearing the beautiful green dress and the various accessories Kaylie had insisted went with it. She felt like a spring flower, all fresh, beautiful and blooming, and it was obvious other people thought so as well. As they walked past, groups of people turned to stare at them in awe. She was glad the pretty mask covered her face; with all those stares, it was inevitable her cheeks were the same shade as her hair.
Which was pretty damn red.
Of course, at least half the reason they were being stared at was Kaylie herself, who had created her own costume in addition to Lizzie’s. It was another 1800s style dress, and a gorgeous one at that, but Lizzie was fairly certain it would’ve been more appropriate for a bordello. Oh, the skirt went all the way to the floor, but it clung to every part of Kaylie’s slim body tightly and flashed more cleavage than was usually considered decent. There also happened to be no back to the gown, save for a mesh of tie-up black laces holding it together.
If her goal was to draw attention, she’d certainly achieved it.
They made it across the ballroom without any trouble, and Lizzie instantly made a beeline for a large table surrounded by multiple comfy-looking chairs. If she was going to be there until after midnight, she may as well have something comfortable to sit on.
Lizzie was determined to have fun and forget about Nathan tonight, even if it was only for a few short hours. She set her jaw as she took a seat, promising herself that she wouldn’t mope. At all. She would return Nathan’s many ignored calls tomorrow and apologize profusely, but for now she just wanted to dance and have fun with her friends, who inconveniently had yet to arrive, besides Kaylie.
Kaylie took the seat beside her and surveyed the room, seemingly in awe of the entire setup. Lizzie was just as amazed. The organization that was running the ball had outdone themselves.
The enormous room was lit my dimmed crystal chandeliers high above that wrapped the attendees in a romantic, shadowy atmosphere. Ten musicians carrying various orchestral instruments sat on cushioned chairs on a stage near the far wall, tuning up. Tables like the ones her and Kaylie were seated at hugged the walls on all sides, leaving a huge space in the middle for dancing. Lizzie estimated there were several hundred people attending, which was intimidating, but amazing. There were so many beautiful costumes.
Kaylie plopped down in the seat next to Lizzie and nudged her arm. “See anyone you like?” She teased.
Lizzie surveyed the room slowly through the holes in her mask. There were a lot of attractive men here – well, men with attractive bodies, considering their faces were hidden – but Lizzie couldn’t find one she felt even the slightest pull towards.
There was only one man she was looking for, and there was no way he was at the ball.
She gave a noncommittal shrug and looked away from Kaylie’s gaze.
