There seemed to be a slight awkward silence at the table especially between Clarice and Heddie. The band thanked her again for her part in ending the shooting. They thought if she hadn't shot the gunman, he might have fired a second round, and that probably would have proved fatal for Freddie.
They finished their meal with a lot of pleasantries spoken and Jim and Timothy were talking business. John was silent staring at Heddie and shaking his head perceptibly. Heddie tried to ignore him as she talked with Roger and Bri. Heddie asked Roger how he and Dominique were doing and to Brian, asking about Anita. Still, the sound of silence was deafening.
John watched with fascination the two beautiful women sitting at the table. Heddie, who Freddie confessed he loved and knew she loved him back and Clarice who most likely provided a respite from his thoughts about Heddie. The band knew Freddie needed an outlet for his astounding sex drive but also knew of his feeling for Heddie. Now the two of them sitting at a table with each other and breaking bread.
Brian, the most analytical of the four was watching John stare at Heddie. It started when Heddie arrived and saw Freddie. What the heck was he watching, Brian questioned, what's going on that John knows but nobody else seems to. Even Timothy seemed a little over protective towards his daughter.
Dinner was finished and as it was getting late, they all said their goodnights and left the restaurant. The management spied Roger in the lobby and ran to him and shouted, "hospital just called looking for the band." The scattered band with the rest stopped dead in their tracks as John ran towards the phone getting there first.
"Yes, this is John Deacon. Yes, oh, God, okay, alright" and hung up.
A cold chill made its way thru Heddie's veins. She shivered and got nauseous all at the same time but was unable to move towards John.
John turned to the gathering and said, "He's coming out of the coma!"
Heddie fainted and was caught by John and carried her to a sofa in the lobby and called for some water. It was a quick faint caused by a sudden rush of roller coaster emotions. Initially thinking he died from John's initial conversation and the reality that he was going to live.
Clarice watched this and really didn't understand Heddie's reaction or her relationship to Freddie and the band. She of course, knew of the the fabulously wealthy Devries name, but what had they to do with Queen?
Timothy rushed to Heddie's side as she came out of her faint and asked if she was okay and she nodded.
"Okay. everybody, let's go to the hospital" Roger announced. They waited for their limousines but the Devries car and driver was always on call.
"Guys", Heddie called, "I'm going with my dad, see you there."
Heddie sat silently in the limo holding her father's hand. Timothy could feel her trembling as he put his arm around her and calmed her down. They reached Banner Hospital before the band and ran towards Freddie's room only to be met by one of the attending physicians.
"What's wrong" Timothy asked.
"Nothing, it's all good news" said the doctor, "it's just that he's wafting in and out of consciousness. It's perfectly normal to do this, but I thought all involved should be notified."
"Can. can uh, can I see him" Heddie asked quietly.
"Miss Devries, he's still unconscious"
"That's okay, I just want to see him before I leave, please."
"Of course" the doctor said, never saying NO to a Devries. There certainly is power in that name.
"Oh, Doctor, the band is on their way, please don't let anyone in until I'm out, alright? Heddie asked with a slight authoritative sound. The physician nodded and left.
