After what had happened we had become more distant. The only one who I talked to was Zion. I was too scared to talk to everyone else. I didn't know what to think of this. Ever since I'd joined the group, creepy things have been happening. I didn't get why they were so suspicious of me but I got it. Nothing weird happened until I showed up.
"You need to stop beating yourself up about this," Zion's sleepy voice said. I was sitting on my bed hugging my knees.
"That's not all I'm thinking about. I'm scared! There's someone out there targeting me... but I don't know why" I said. He was silent. Then I heard rustling.
"I won't let anything get you. You need to sleep though" Zion said, sitting down next to me. "Please," he said.
"Okay," I said. I laid down and pulled my blanket over me. I stared at Zion in the darkness. He returned my gaze. Somehow with him there I felt safe. I ended up falling asleep a few minutes later.
I woke up the next morning and Zion was sleeping soundly at the end of my bed. I gently moved off my bed trying not to wake him up. And then I slipped my hoodie on. I turned around and put my blanket over Zion. I grabbed a book from my bag and sat at the head of my bed. A while later, Zion and Lizzie woke up.
"Good morning," I said to them.
"Good morning," Zion's sleepy voice replied. Lizzie didn't answer me. I sighed.
"How are you feeling?" Zion asked me.
"Better I guess, I finally got some sleep thanks to you but I'm still not sure," I said. He nodded.
"I'm starving, let's head out and find some food," I said.
"Kay" Zion and I headed to the meeting room to get Jay and Ethan and Jaden.
"Are you ready?" Jay asked.
"Yeah I've got a gun," I said.
"Alright let's head out," Zion said.
We stuck to the shadows so we couldn't be spotted very well. One by one we ended up at a grocery store.
"Aw man, there's not much here!" Jay said.
"Wait look over there!" I said. I pointed to a basket of food that seemed to be left behind. Jaden went over to it while the rest of us searched.
"Augh!" I heard Jaden groan and then the sound of a body being dragged could be heard. I ran over to where the basket was and I saw a trail of blood leading out of the door. I covered my mouth to hide a scream but it escaped anyway.
"What's wrong!?" Zion said running over to me. I couldn't speak so I pointed.
"What the hell?" Zion exclaimed. Zion told me to stay put while he looked. While he was gone I got pushed and I fell down a set of stairs. I groaned and tried to stand up but my ankle gave way. A few minutes later, Zion walked back in
"Kylie?!" He yelled.
"Down here I was pushed!" I said.
"What?" He asked. He came down the stairs.
"Can you walk?" He asked.
"Not really," I said.
"He crouched down and told me to get on his back. We walked out. I looked around.
"It's better if you don't see anything," Zion said.
"Oh," I said. I buried my face in his shoulder.
We walked out of the parking lot and waited to see where Jay was.
He emerged from the parking lot covered in blood. He was breathing heavily.
"What happened?" I asked.
"A huge group of Zombies came and tried to attack me," Jay said.
"Did they bite you anywhere?" Zion asked.
"No, I kept my distance" Jay replied.
"Man what is that awful smell?!" Zion said.
"It smells like Rotting humans..." I said.
"Others have been killing people," Jay said. We made our way through town and we made it to the entrance when a huge group of zombies came our way.
"Shit," Zion said.
"Get her inside," Jay said.
"What about you?" I asked.
"I'll be right behind you," Jay said. Zion ran inside and we heard the gates shutting. He walked to the meeting room and set me down in one of the chairs they had.
"What happened?" Lizzie asked. "Are you okay?" Lizzie asked.
"Yes and no" I replied. "I twisted my ankle pretty bad falling down a set of stairs" I admitted.
"Girl you're too clumsy..." She sighed. I laughed.
"I was pushed though," I said.
"Okay then that changes things, where's Jay?" she asked.
"I'm right here," he said. He was in a new change of clothes and everything.
"Let's get you some ice for your ankle," He said. I shrugged.
"Okay" Jay wrapped my ankle and we decided to have lunch. After lunch, we all talked about what to do next. Later that day, I was walking to my room when,
Swoosh! There's that noise again! I turned and saw someone running. I followed them as fast as my feet could carry me. Which wasn't very fast but...
I followed them to a set of stairs. This place has a downstairs??? I walked carefully down the stairs and into pitch black. I fumbled for a light switch. I found one and I flipped it. The lights turned on. What??? The lights haven't worked for at least a year now.... What is going on? I walked around checking doors but most of them were locked. I saw a stack of boxes and went over to them. And inside one of them was Jaden's switchblade knife. I picked it up and stuffed it in my pocket. I'm gonna show Zion this. I thought. I looked around some more. But there was no sign of the person I saw earlier.
I walked back upstairs and Bumped into Zion and Jay.
"What are you guys doing?" I asked
"Looking for you" They both said.
"You weren't in our room like you said you'd be," Zion said.
"Oh I'm sorry," I said.
"It's fine I'm going to head back to the meeting room," Jay said.
"Okay," Me and Zion said.
"Why were you really down there?" Zion asked when Jay was out of hearing range.
"I saw that person again and I followed them. There's a stack of boxes down there and Guess what I found in one of them?" I said.
"What?" He asked. I pulled the knife out of my pocket and showed it to him.
"Jaden's knife..." I said.
"Why was it down there?" He asked.
"I don't know but I don't have a good feeling about this," I said.
"We can't tell anyone, me and you are gonna keep this a secret, tomorrow we are going to come down here again and look around," Zion said.
"Um okay," I said. "I just feel bad isn't that like....lying?" I said.
"Sorta but you don't want everyone getting suspicious of you do you?" He asked.
"Not really they already are and it will make this worse," I said.
"Let's go," He said. We walked to the meeting room and acted as if nothing had happened.
"Okay guys let's get some rest," Jay said. We all headed back to our rooms and everyone but me fell asleep, well that's what I thought. I heard rustling from the back of the room and I just threw the blanket over my head.
"Hey" I heard someone say. I pulled the blanket off of my head and looked up.
"Zion?" I asked.
"Who else?" He said.
"What??" I asked.
"You wanna go now while everyone's asleep, it makes it easier, no one will catch us and tell Jay '' He said.
"That makes more sense," I said. We snuck out of the room and headed towards the stairs. When we were at the top of the stairs I got this feeling something was wrong. The lights were off.
"What?" Zion asked, seeing the look on my face.
"The lights are off," I said.
"You didn't turn them off?" He asked.
"Well no..." I said.
"Someone's been down here," He said. We walked down the stairs and I felt the wall for the light switch. I flipped the switch and suddenly the lights flickered and then were on.
"Woah they actually do work," He said.
"I told you and you obviously doubted me," I said hitting his arm. We walked down the hallway trying the doors again and since there were two of us it was faster.
Suddenly, there was a loud crash and the lights went out. My first instinct was to run. I think I was about halfway to the stairs when I tripped over something. I fell and I heard footsteps approaching. I rolled to the right and I hit the wall. Better than getting trampled or tripped over... I felt a hand grab my arm and I screamed in surprise
"Shush, it's me," Zion said. He pulled me up and we ran. We made it up the stairs and we turned the corner.
"That was close!" I said.
"Yeah" Zion agreed. "I don't know how Lila was afraid of someone as clumsy as you" He commented. I cringed when he said her name.
"Let's head back" we turned our flashlights back on and went to our rooms.
When we walked in someone stopped us.
"What were you two doing?" Jay's voice asked.
"We went to get a snack, we were hungry," I said.
"Yeah," Zion said.
"Okay you're not lying are you?" Jay asked.
"No," We both said at the same time.
"Okay," He let us walk by and we both went to bed. I decided to let Zion have the bed this time and I used the couch. Imagine laying on a couch that is so tiny and he's so tall. I'm short so I fit a lot more. In the morning, Lizzie and I decided to sit and talk in our room. We got to know each other and we played a small round of Truth or dare. When my turn came I kept picking dare and Lizzie almost always picked truth.
