some people know this but some don't so I am going to explain it.
so think you want an item in your toolbar but you don't want to go to your inventory and get it, just look at the block you want and press the button (middle click) so if your toolbar is empty and you press middle click you get that block in your toolbar or it will go to the nearest empty slot in your toolbar or say your toolbar if full and the block will go to the slot you are holding. but some people are playing on a computer so they don't have a middle click button so you need to go to controls and change it to any key that is not in use.

"1" - toolbar slot 1
"2" - toolbar slot 2
"3" - toolbar slot 3
"4" - toolbar slot 4
"5" - toolbar slot 5
"6" - toolbar slot 6

"9" - toolbar slot 9
"e" - open/close inventory
"f" - swap item with off hand
