Lies

———

What happened to the town?" Guinevere whispered while looking at the starry night.

The moon was beautiful. It shone brightly at the world, depicting freedom and creating an illusion that this world is righteous when in fact, the 'majestic creation' is nothing but a nightmare in this era.

Angela shifted on her leaning position and flashed Lady Crane a sad smile. She couldn't help but feel bad at the insensitive question she threw to the floral elf. She experienced a lot of hardships today and asking her that question may reminisced her awful memories.

"The devils attacked this town to claim as their territory. They were disappointed because our town is small so they went berserk and massacred everyone." Angela sighs and looks away, "No one can stop them. Most of the races on our town are humans. The only survivors are me and Chou." She looks at Lady Crane and gave off another sad smile.

"I'm a floral elf who disguised herself as a human. The only reason we survived is because of my protection magic I cast on my husband before he got buried in the rubble. He's a resilient one too. He wouldn't die on that."

"Why?" Lady Crane tilted her head and asked Angela.

"Why?" Angela mirrored her reaction.

"Why do you have to disguise yourself?"

The cold wind breeze blew their locks as Angela looked at her saviour, a bitter smile now plastered on her face. She stood up and looks at the moon again.

"Human are the weakest race. I—" Angela sighs, "I fell in love with Chou, a human, despite being an elf. It was forbidden to do so. I was thrown out the moonlit forest."

Lady Crane shifted on her position and there was nothing but genuine empathy plastered on her angelic features. The moonlight gently shone to them, casting an ethereal glow to their bodies.

"That is not right."

"The world thinks otherwise. The humans hates every race. They were used as slaves by the dominating races. Even the angels despises humans."

"I do not despise humans." Lady Crane whispers.

"I know. If you do, you wouldn't have saved Chou. You continued to look at me genuinely despite knowing I'm no longer affiliated with the elves. Saving me and my husband doesn't give you any benefits."

"Is there a need for benefits before saving someone?"

Angela sighs as she let her wings vanish behind her back. Her long ears disappeared along with any of her elves features.

"Yes. Being kind is nothing but a joke in the middle of this war." Angela's eyes watered at her answer. "So... next time, think before you save. Most races hates both the angels and devils. They started the war. They wanted to know who's on top. They wanted to reign and we're nothing but the collateral damage."

"Then... do you regret being saved by me, an angel?" Lady Crane's voice remained steady and curiosity laced on every pronunciation. There was no judgement on her tone.

"No." Angela looks at Lady Crane again, "If you haven't saved us, we are most likely burnt to crisp right now. We owe you our lives."

She suddenly looked at Lady Crane seriously. "How about you? Do you regret saving us?"
