The words spun around my head until the bell snapped me out of my thoughts. I said my goodbyes to Aaron since you have to go finish homework for other classes. I still had 2 or 3 more before the day was done but they were the easy classes that went by fast so I usually didn't mind. Key word being usually. I had the same questions banging against my skull and I was on the verge of an anxiety attack all day.
I left my last class and checked my phone just in case I got a text. As usual I only had one text from Aaron saying I should call him if I needed help with my homework. I called up my sister Sofia just to check in on her before I went to the library.
"Hey Sof! How was your day" I said with the soft and sweet voice I always use when I talk to her.
"Great!" She went on and on about her day and how happy she was. I could listen to her for hours and forget I had work to do.
When she is happy, nothing else matters to me. She is my motivation to do anything at this point.
"Momma is calling me to do my homework. She wants to know when you are coming home?" She asked with her high pitched innocent voice.
"Tell Momma I'll be back by dinner and if that changes,I'll let you know" I said honestly now knowing how long my paper would take to write since I am going to be looking for a mysterious book no one knows about.
We said our goodbyes and hung up. I started my 10 minute or so walk to the library hoping Mr. Moon wasn't lying about his book that he magically knew about. I sent Aaron a quick text telling him I was at the library starting to work on my essay if he wanted to come help me. To be honest I just wanted him to bring me food which, thankfully, he caught onto and asked if I wanted chicken nuggets or a burger. Of course I said chicken nuggets and he said he would be here in about thirty minutes to an hour. I was really excited for him to get here since I haven't eaten since this morning at five am and it is now four pm.
I walked to the back of the library and set down my bag. I pulled out my notebooks and the note from Mr. Moon. I started looking around for the book.
"I got food!" Aaron said coming up behind me.
"What time is it?" I didn't think I was looking for that long, especially since I haven't found anything yet.
Aaron showed me his phone which said that it was five fifteen. Aaron and I sat down for a few minutes and I told him I still haven't found anything. He suggested I check the back of the library with all the old law, government, and textbooks that no one touches.
I rolled my eyes but his idea made sense. The fact that no one looks back there would make it understandable that people thought it doesn't exist. Aaron stayed at the table while he finished eating and I went to search the shelves in the back. All I saw were old, ripped, and dusty textbooks.
I was about to walk back and tell Aaron that our teacher lied but among all the gross books I saw a book that looked clean and untouched.
It was the book Mr. Moon told me to find. It looks like no one has touched it since it first got on the shelf. But how did it end up back here hidden from everyone?
I grabbed it and brought it back to where Aaronwas sitting. This is what I was told to find 'Untold Stories no one Will Tell You' by L. Luna. The cover was plain white with a dot on the cover that looked similar to mine.
I set the book down on the table and put my hand next to it. My eyes switch back and forth from the dot on my hand to the dot on the cover.
"Nixie I think this is what you have been looking for" Aaron said with a dumb cocky smile.
"No! Really?" I said back jokingly yet still partially mesmerized by the uncanny resemblance between the book and myself.
The longer I stared at the cover the more questions began to surface in my mind. I finally snapped out of my trance and sat down starting to read. Little did I know that reading this might be the best thing for me and the worst for my family and government.
"Hey are you okay?" asked Aaron.
I opened the book and there was a handwritten note scribbled on the inside of the cover.
"If you are reading this then you must be like me. You are someone with a rainbow dot. You probably don't understand what this means but you will soon. The most important thing you must remember is that you can't trust anyone in the government and if you give up they'll kill you. Good luck" I read it out loud my breath getting heavier and heavier with each word.
