"When I said come back soon, this was not what I meant!" Lilia shouted as she met her son at the clinic.
Arthur rushed straight to the operating room with a bloody Thea in his arms. The door was shut behind him by Dr. Walahan, forcing Arthur's family out of the room.
"What the hell happened?" The doctor asked. Arthur set her carefully down on the table, his shirt covered in blood and Thea's wolf-form caked in it too. Dr. Walahan immediately got to work.
"I don't know, she collapsed in front of our car near the border," Arthur said desperately.
"Call her parents," Dr. Walahan shouted as he examined and focused on Thea's chest. Arthur heard murmuring behind him and saw his parents scrambling behind the glass. Lev had his phone pressed against his ear, his arm comforting his mate, and his eyes trained on the glass.
"She's not breathing like she should be," the doctor muttered to himself. "I'm going to have to open her up. Have you got ahold of her parents yet?"
"They said she came back early to see Arthur off. We guess she got attacked on her way here. Arthur?" Lev caught his son's attention.
Arthur was nauseous. Thea had come to surprise him and ended up a bloody, injured mess. If she hadn't been found...why wasn't she using the mind link?
"Arthur!" Lev boomed at his distracted son. Arthur turned to him with a distraught look on his face.
"Yeah?"
"I have to go take care of patrol and make sure no one else is hurt. Your mother is on the phone with her parents. You got this?" Lev's eyes trained on his son. Arthur clenched his jaw and nodded, watching his dad sprint out the door, before he turned back to his best friend. He had to hold in his vomit at the sight of the doctor cutting her open.
"Do you feel comfortable enough to help?" Dr. Walahan murmured, clearly focused on the bloody body in front of him.
"Yeah," Arthur breathed. The doctor commanded him to put on gloves and be ready to assist as soon as possible.
"Hold this right here," Doctor Walahan told him to put pressure near the spot he was cutting. Arthur wasn't squeamish, but watching his best friend getting cut open made him want to hurl.
"How's everything going in there?" Lilia's voice came through the speaker. "The Alphas want an update."
"Working on it. I haven't opened her up fully yet. Tell them—" He froze at whatever he was looking at and slowly stepped back. "Arthur, remove your hands—carefully." Spooked, Arthur did as he was told.
"What's going on?" Lilia asked.
"Tell the Alphas to come home. Now!" Dr. Walahan yelled. Lilia was talking as fast as she could through the phone and met her son's eyes. When Arthur went to leave the room, the doctor stopped him. "We can't leave."
"What the hell? Why? Can't you see how upset she is?" Arthur pointed to his mother angrily. She had hung up the phone and was rubbing her forehead aggressively.
"Is it bad?" She asked quietly. The room was quiet and still except for the rise and fall of Thea's chest.
"Tell Lev to do what he needs to do and get back. I'm going to need him in here," murmured Dr. Walahan.
"Why can't I help? I can come in—"
"Because this is the same black substance that came out of Lev," the doctor snapped in response. Lilia's hand flew up to her mouth and her eyes rolled to the back of her head.
"Mom!" Arthur yelled and slammed himself up against the glass. Dr. Walahan had to wrestle him away from the door for a couple minutes before Arthur gave up. "She's hurting! Let me go!"
"If that shit gets in your mom's system, we probably won't be able to fix it. Stay here, link your father, and calm the hell down!" The doctor snapped. "I'm getting too old for this."
"Dad, we need you back here as quick as you can," Arthur murmured to his father through their link. He rested his head against the cool glass and kept his eyes on his mom.
"I'm finishing up with patrol right now," Lev answered.
"Mom's unconscious and I can't fucking help her! Get down here," Arthur snarled. He shut the mind link afterwards, refusing to answer any of his father's questions. It took less than a minute for Lev to burst through the door, his Lycan at the forefront of his human body. He went to his mate and checked for injuries before turning to Arthur.
"What the hell is going on?" Lev's eyes moved from the doctor's eyes to his hand, which was pointed at Thea's body. "Holy shit!"
"Can someone please update me here?" Arthur shouted in anger.
"Go to the blacksmith, we're going to need another one of those boxes," Dr. Walahan commanded.
"Will she be alright?" Lev looked at Lilia.
"She's just shocked. We'll keep an eye on her and link you if anything happens," Dr. Walahan promised. As soon as his dad was gone, Arthur swung to the doctor and barraged him with questions.
"I'll tell you, take a breath," Dr. Walahan groaned. He sat down on one of the stools and kept an eye on Thea as he told Arthur his father's story.
"You're...you're saying she's a Lycan? That's not possible!"
"I'm telling you what I saw with my own damn eyes," Dr. Walahan growled. "And all we know is that thing is highly erratic and dangerous."
"So we can't do shit until that silver box is here? I thought you said you took it out of dad?"
"Your father's was just a blob...Thea's is living off of her. I've never seen anything like it. We can't be sure," the doctor answered. This was not how Arthur saw his day going. His attention moved to the door to the viewing area slamming open, and he turned believing it was his father. His heart dropped into his stomach when he saw Kat's horrified face.
"Hey," he coaxed through the glass. She looked at him and he could already see tears in her eyes. "Everything's okay. Can you try to wake mom up? Dad had to go do something." Kat nodded, tears in her eyes, and slowly sat next to mom. Arthur watched them until their mom woke, a little dazed.
"What are you doing here?" Lilia immediately jumped into comfort mode as soon as she saw her emotional daughter and Arthur turned away, feeling a little bit better. That all went away when he turned around to the black, wet slime inching out of Thea's body.
"Somehow, this just got more interesting," murmured Dr. Walahan.
"Alright, let's figure this out."
