Voight's POV
A new detective. Great. Just what I needed.
I'd only been told two days ago, and I still wasn't thrilled. Samantha Walker - transferring from Texas. That was all I knew. No background, no history, no sense of whether she could be trusted. And now she was late.
Perfect.
I stepped out of my office. "Where are we on the case?"
"Sarge, we got an address."
"Alright. Suit up."
We headed out, but traffic stopped us cold. An accident up ahead. As we waited, I heard a firefighter yell something - "Miller!" - and then more shouting.
The car had gone over.
I didn't think. I just ran.
Down the hill, toward the overturned vehicle. Flames were starting to build, smoke rising. Gas leaking. Not much time.
I tried the door - jammed. So I climbed through the broken window. Inside, a woman was slumped in the back, barely conscious. I unbuckled her and pulled her toward me, careful but fast.
Once outside, I lifted her and ran.
The explosion hit behind us, knocking us forward. I twisted my body to shield her as we hit the ground. Debris rained down, but she was safe beneath me.
When everything settled, I helped her sit up. She looked dizzy, unfocused, barely hearing me. Something was wrong.
I tried to stand - my knee gave out. Pain shot through it, but I ignored it. She needed help more than I needed to complain.
So I picked her up again and carried her out of the water and smoke.
Whoever she was... she wasn't just some bystander.
