Samantha's POV
The first thing I feel is the cold.
Not the kind that bites - the kind that settles into your bones, like you've been underwater too long. My head is heavy, my eyelids heavier. Voices echo around me, but they're muffled, distant, like I'm listening through a wall.
I try to move. Bad idea. My head throbs instantly.
"Easy."
The voice is low. Rough. Familiar.
I force my eyes open, blinking against the bright hospital lights. Everything is blurry at first, shapes blending together, but then one figure sharpens.
A man.
Tall.
Serious.
Jaw clenched like he's been holding his breath for hours.
He's sitting in a chair beside my bed, leaning forward, elbows on his knees. His shirt is still damp, dirt on the sleeves, and there's a brace wrapped around his knee.
He looks like he's been through hell.
And then I realize - he's the one who pulled me out.
"You're awake," he says, voice softer than I expected.
I swallow, my throat dry. "Barely."
He huffs a breath - not quite a laugh, but close. "You gave everyone a scare."
I try to sit up, but he reaches out, steadying me with a hand on my shoulder. His touch is firm but careful, like he's afraid I'll break.
"Take it slow," he says.
I look at him properly now. The lines on his face. The intensity in his eyes. The way he's watching me like he's trying to figure out who I am.
"Did... did the kids make it?" I ask.
His expression softens. "Yeah. Thanks to you."
Relief washes over me so fast it makes me dizzy again.
He notices. "Hey, hey - breathe. You hit your head pretty hard."
I close my eyes for a second, grounding myself. When I open them again, he's still watching me.
Still there.
Still... concerned.
"Why are you here?" I ask quietly.
He hesitates - just for a moment - then reaches into his pocket and pulls out something familiar.
My badge.
He sets it gently on the blanket beside me.
"Because," he says, "you're Detective Samantha Walker."
I blink. "How do you-"
"I'm Hank Voight," he says. "Your new sergeant."
Oh.
Oh.
Well... that explains the attitude.
And the authority.
And the way he's looking at me like he's trying to decide if I'm trouble or a miracle.
I let out a breath. "So... this is my first day, huh?"
He shakes his head, almost smiling. "You weren't supposed to start it by falling off a bridge."
"Yeah, well," I mumble, "I like to make an entrance."
He actually smiles this time - small, but real. And for a second, the room feels warmer.
A nurse walks in, checking my vitals. "Detective Walker, you're lucky. Concussion, bruising, but nothing serious. You'll need rest."
Voight stands, wincing slightly at his knee. The nurse notices.
"You should get that looked at," she tells him.
"I'm fine," he mutters.
I raise an eyebrow. "You sure? Because you look like you're about to fall over."
He gives me a look - the kind that says he's not used to being questioned - but there's something else behind it too. Something almost amused.
"I'll manage," he says.
The nurse leaves, and for a moment, it's just the two of us again.
Silence settles, but not the awkward kind. The kind that feels like something is shifting, even if neither of us knows what yet.
Voight clears his throat. "When you're cleared, come by the district. We'll get you settled."
I nod. "Yes, Sarge."
He pauses at the door, glancing back at me.
"You did good today," he says quietly. "Real good."
And then he's gone.
Leaving me staring at the door, wondering how the hell my first day in Chicago turned into... whatever this is.
