Samantha’s POV
For a long moment, neither of us moved.
Voight’s forehead rested against mine, his breath warm, steady, grounding. The afternoon light painted soft gold across the sheets tangled around us. His hand was still on my waist, fingers curled lightly like he wasn’t ready to let go.
I wasn’t ready either.
He pulled back just enough to look at me — really look at me — his eyes softer than I’d ever seen them.
“You slept,” he murmured.
“So did you.”
“Not much.”
“You were comfortable,” I teased.
He huffed a quiet laugh. “You were on my arm.”
“And you didn’t move.”
“Didn’t want to.”
My heart skipped.
He shifted slightly, propping himself up on an elbow. The blanket slid down his shoulder, revealing the bruises from the fight — dark, angry marks that made my chest tighten.
“You’re hurt,” I whispered.
“I’m fine.”
“You’re lying.”
He didn’t argue.
Instead, he reached out and brushed a strand of hair from my face, his fingers lingering a second too long.
“You scared me,” he said again, softer this time.
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it keeps being true.”
I swallowed. “You scared me too.”
He didn’t smile.
He didn’t joke.
He didn’t look away.
He just held my gaze like the world had narrowed to this moment, this bed, this breath between us.

Voight’s POV
She was too close.
Or maybe I was.
Either way, the room felt warm, quiet, full of something I didn’t have a name for. The afternoon sun lit her hair, her eyes, the soft curve of her cheek. She looked tired, but alive. Safe.
And I didn’t want to move.
“You should rest more,” I said.
“You should too.”
“I’m fine.”
“You’re not.”
She reached out and touched my cheek — gentle, careful, like she was afraid I’d break.
I didn’t.
But something in me shifted.
“You don’t have to worry about me,” I said.
“I know.”
“But you do anyway.”
“Yeah.”
Her thumb brushed the edge of a bruise, and I felt it everywhere.
“You’re staring again,” she whispered.
I didn’t deny it.
“Can’t help it,” I said quietly.
Her breath caught.
And for a second — one long, suspended second — I thought she might close the distance between us.
I thought I might let her.
I thought I might meet her halfway.
But she didn’t move.
And neither did I.
We just stayed there, inches apart, breathing the same air, the moment stretching thin and warm between us.

Samantha’s POV
He shifted closer — not enough to touch, but enough that I felt the heat of him, enough that my pulse jumped.
“Voight…” I whispered.
“Yeah.”
“What are we doing?”
He exhaled slowly, like he’d been holding the question in his chest for hours.
“I don’t know,” he said. “But I’m not walking away from it.”
My heart thudded once, hard.
He reached for my hand under the blanket, his fingers brushing mine before curling around them — slow, deliberate, careful.
His hand was warm.
Steady.
Safe.
And it felt like something we weren’t supposed to name yet.
“You okay?” he asked.
“Yeah.”
“You sure?”
I nodded. “Are you?”
He hesitated — then nodded.
“Yeah,” he said softly. “With you? Yeah.”
The room felt smaller.
The air felt warmer.
The sheets tangled around our legs felt like an anchor holding us in place.
He didn’t kiss me.
I didn’t kiss him.
But the moment felt like the breath before one.
And neither of us pulled away.
