"Come on Thing you need to come out." Gray says whispering cautiously through the door.
"Thing if we don't leave now, with you of course, your dad will kick us out...then beat you. Please let us in or come out. Please." I beg.
"Come on sweets. Without you were nothing. We are three pieces to this huge puzzle we call life and without you the beautiful part we all make up together is not complete. Without you life isn't complete, sweets."
A sniff comes from the door and it unlocks. "Come in guys." Thing says clothes with layers of black.
We slip into his room and silently close the door. Even going to extra step to turn the knob while we close it.
Thing sits on his old beat up mattress and crosses his arms into his hoodie. "Can you take the hood off sweetie? We haven't seen you in weeks, let's see your beautiful face." Gray says wrapping an arm around Thing.
"No. " Thing says
I sit in front of the bed facing Thing as Gray questions him. I cock my head to the side and see purple. I strain my eyes closer and see his right eye is swollen shut and his bottom lip has split on the right. "Why didn't you call us?" I ask beginning to cry "or run to Gray?"
Thing sniffs and laughs. "You'd think it would be that easy huh. Just leave the house while he's sleeping. Or even run during the day."
Gray signals me to scoot back and gets on one knee In front of thing and slowly takes off his hood to reveal the now smashed and purple face of the one beautiful boy we call Thing.
Gray tears up "I'm going to kill him." He whispers.
Thing moves his far out of the way of Gray trembling fingers "it's not all him. I got beat up by some kid at school. That's why my lips busted. It's only this bad because when i get mad I bite at the cut. The feeling I get along with the taste of blood sustains my anger." He says licking his lip.
Gray buries his weeping eyes into Things lap. "Sweets why? Why would you hurt yourself love why?" I ask standing up and sitting next to Thing. "you don't know how bad I hurt myself." Thing replies.
Gray looks up red with tears bawling.Gray and I sit next to each other on the bed while Thing stands in front of us. "I am sorry sweets."
Thing then takes off his hoodie and reveals a few cuts on his arm. He turns around and takes off his shirt. Scars from cuts whips and what looks like a teapot line and over lap his back like splatters of paint. I bury my face in my hands and bawl. "Was that you?" Gray asks
"These were." He says pointing to his arms.
Gray starts to laugh. He wipes his tears and laughs still crying. "What?!" Thing says angry.
"That is no way out. That is temporary relief that honestly makes it all worse. The constant reminder that you can't handle emotional pain will haunt you. It will weaken you. It will ruin you. Why not find help instead. If you can go through the pain of cutting your own flesh so often they never go away proves to me you can handle the pain of getting help well enough." Gray says still crying.
"You don't understand James! Non of you do!" Thing yells crying now.
"Neither do you. You don't get it at all. We love you! LOVE! The only ones in your life who have loved you as much as the all mighty does! We need each other! Your cuts are not invited." He says back.
I run to Thing and hold him. Crying into his back as much as I can. My glasses are hurting my nose so bad. I know Thing feels them too. He collapses to the ground. Like a leech I fall with him.
"You don't understand! You don't love me! Non of you do. NON OF YOU!" Thing screams shaking me off.
I fall off of him still crying barely able to see. "I do not pity you. I do not pity you because I love you. I know you can make it. I know you are strong. But not alone with us. Without each other we are weak and we will fall. I do not pity you." Gray says helping me up.
I grab Things jacket and lay it on his back. "I love you." I say and kiss his scars.
Gray kneels beside the weeping Thing and whispers something in his ear. Then kisses his head long and hard.
We sit next to him as he cries and he eventually falls asleep. We grab a blanket off his bed and lay next to each other. Gray looks at me and says "Don't worry about him. When I am gone he will be fine. Only under the circumstance that we stick together even after I am gone. How that will work I don't know but you can use your big old brain to find out sweets." Gray kisses my forehead and then Things head once more. "Sleep now my lovelies. We have a long road ahead."
