Yasmini's POV

Don't cry, don't breathe, don't make a fucking sound, and you'll survive.

I slept during the day in the trees. I didn't fully understand what was happening to me, and I couldn't do it again, so I chalked it up to the ghost of my family trying to save me. I know how stupid it sounds, but it's better than being a freak.

I spent 2 years out there, just among the trees. I killed whatever animal I could find and then lit a fire midday so I couldn't be spotted. I used the pelts for warmth at night.

I was happy to be alive, but I was so lonely. I came through other towns, but I never stayed long, I knew they were coming for me. I should have killed the man who ran off that night, but I didn't, I was weak.

I was going to the river at dusk when I felt a tap on my back. I spun around and saw a woman in a maroon pantsuit. I growled and barred my knife.
"Fala inglés?" She asked.
I've spoken English all my life, we learned it in schools since we were 3 years old. Plus, my father always wanted to move to the U.S., but my mother was too afraid.
"Yes." I said still holding my knife in attack position.
"I am Miss Alma LeFay Peregrine, you may call me Miss Peregrine. You are Yasmini Aldello, correct?"
"Who's asking."
"I run a children's home in Carinholm. You'll be safe from whoever's hunting you."
Safe? How did she know? Unless.... I kept toward her and held the knife to her throat.
"Who told you? WHO!" I yelled. The woman stayed unfazed.
"Miss Aldello, I must ask you to remove your weapon." She said curtly.
"Not until you tell me how you know about me."
"We have ymbrynes in training, watching everywhere."
I released my pressure a bit, but didn't let go.
"What?"
"Please, just gather your things and say goodbye to anyone you must and come with me."
"Fine."
I didn't want to tell her that everyone I knew, that everyone I loved, was dead.
"We have to move fast, they come sweep the stream over here around this time." I said darkly.

Miss Peregrine brought me to a large house less than a day later. It was midday when I got there. I saw a forest around us, perfect to spy on from above, and plenty of plump squirrels for food. I slung my overflowing bag (which had all Eliza's things too) and gripped the knife in my pocket, Miss Peregrine took my gun. I never used it anyways, it felt wrong to kill something without feeling it, it was almost automatic.

I saw kids running over the lawn stop and stare at me. A tall boy with black goggles pulled the girl with wild hair closer to him and father away from me. A tall boy with black hair smiled at me warmly. I didn't smile back.
"Emma?"
A girl with blonde hair came bouncing over.
"Hi I'm Emma!" She stuck her hand out but flinched when I shook it after she saw the dirt and blood under my nails.
"Can you show her to the room across from Abe's?"
Emma blushed at the boys name and nodded. She looked to be about my age. She linked arms with me and drug me into the house. I felt the lingering eyes of the tall boy as I slid out of view.

The room was sun soaked and a light blush pink. There were two white metal twin beds.
"We can go to town and get whatever color paint and bed spread you like, good thing you're here today though, with the loop being created and everything."
I spun around to face her.
"Loop?" I said sharply. Emma swallowed and glanced at the door.
"You know, to keep us safe from the war."
"There is no safe from war. Ever." I bit.
"Miss Aldello, how are you settling in?" Miss Peregrine asked warmly. Emma left the room and took the another dark hair boys hand, the same one who stared me earlier.
"Loop? What is that? You said this was safe, but war is here too! You lied!" I yelled.
"Polite persons do not yell, Miss Aldello."
"Oh bullshit! Polite persons don't kill entire villages, but it happens! I know was I am from war."
"Our loop will be created and finished tonight, you will never need to worry about war again."
"Stop saying words that I don't understand!" I stomped towards the bay window and glanced at the young kids playing football (a/n soccer)
Miss Peregrine sat at the edge of the bed that was closet to the door.
"A loop is a time period that repeats the day over and over again. You'll never age."
"What? How is that possible."
"Like I said earlier, I am an ymbryne. Time bending and manipulation is my peculiarity."
"What is that?"
"How about we have a little chat?"

Peculiar. She called me peculiar. She even had to explain to me what it meant, I knew English, but I never heard that word before. Apparently there were loops in Brazil, but they were killed too by the same men who killed my family. She said there were villages full of peculiars living outside loops. She also told me about hollows, who eat peculiar eyes.
"You have a gift," she said, "you just need to learn how to use it."
So that night in the jungle weren't the spirits of my family, it was me. It didn't feel as reassuring as I hoped it would.

Miss Peregrine said I had dinner in an hour, but I wasn't interested. I spent time in my room, trying to make things move like I did on that night, but nothing worked.
"Get back, get back, GET BACK!"
Everything in my room shook at the memory. I sat up, and looked around, did I do that? I stared at the lamp on my night table and willed it to move with my mind, but it didn't budge.
Move
Nothing
Move
Still nothing
MOVE
And then it did. Anger? That's what made it work? Or was the intense feelings I had the only way I could start to learn how to control it?
Either way, I had a lot to learn.
