Part 3: My Job

The woman bent down near the man as a crowd began to form as she kept on yelling.
  "ANYONE PLEASE!"
  "..."
  "I'm a doctor!"
Someone yelled as he ran over and started to preform CPR on the man, he had passed out at this point...I knew it was time to do my job.
For everyone except Geno and the dead...I was no longer anything. I was but a chilling cold breeze that brought in dark clouds and flocks of ravens, I made ruby red roses black as the darkest midnight's...and no one saw me coming till it was to late.
When the clouds vanish, when the last raven flaps it's wing, and when the roses petals fall out of the darkness. There would be nothing left except the remnants of what was, and what will never be again.
That's all I was
I walked over to the man, woman, and doctor, he was still doing CPR but there wasn't much of point any more. I felt his pulse getting weaker, and weaker until.
  "What is this?.."
  "This is it..."
  "It?..
I saw the man look at himself, he saw the doctor trying to save his life as the woman cryed for it. He reached his hand up to try and comfort her.
"L-Lea..."
His hand passed through her face, she didn't even react. Well it wasn't like I was expecting her to.
"Why can't I..."
"I have feeling you already know why"
The man closed his eyes for a moment and breathed.
"My angel... I'm so sorry"
"You have nothing to apologize for, you couldn't control this even if you tried."
  "How do you know that?"
"I know things, many things actually, I've been around ever sense there was life."
  "And death..."
I sulked a bit, but he didn't notice.
The man, even though he knew she couldn't feel him, still put his hand up near her face on her cheek.
"That's...not all I'm sorry for though... My duaghter...  I've done you so wrong, and I was just starting to say sorry."
  "Her name is Lea?"
I try to sympathize with the dead, it makes my job easier sometimes.
The man smiled as tears began to role down his face.
  "Yes...after her g-grandmother..."
  "It suits her..."
  "T-Thanks..."
He looked away from her, and me for a moment. Then back at me.
"Please...just a little more time...it's her birthday...and I know she is grown but... I'm fixing what I broke a long time ago, so please just until then..."
"You know...if you stay...even if it is for a little while longer, when you do go it will be harder for her."
At this point all he was doing was crying as he rubbed his daughters face.
  "What's your name?"
"...S-Samuel..."
  "Look Samuel I-"
  "You don't know what's it's like..."
He cut me off...with that... When that happens it normally isn't good.
"You won't ever know what it is like to see your child...your baby...your angel...cry and weep over you and know that you can't do anything to comfort them...to try their tears... Because even if you could, they would just keep crying... Because of you..."
  "..."
"I doubt that you understand that feeling...of hopelessness...of being so powerless... I doubt you'll ever come to understand that."
He was right and I knew that, and he wasn't the first one to tell me. But even so every time I hear it I never know how to respond.
That's when he said something else.
"No one deserves that feeling though, not me...not anyone...not you... You're just doing your job...I should've realised that and not said those things...but even though I shouldn't have I still feel as if my words were true."
"Hehe...they are...I don't have much, and family is definitely not part of the little I have..."
"Then change that"
"I doubt I can do that"
"I do not, from life there is death...I beilive that from death there is new life. God has a way of working in mysterious ways, you are an angel of death, I can only assume that he has made another that can withstand that darkness..."
Again he looked back up at his daughter.
"Such as with my daughter...she might've not seen the best of me, but all I could ever see of her was her kindness... So if there was hope for me and my darkness, then there will be for you and yours."
"You're being to nice to me...so I think I know where your daughter gets her kindness from..."
"Oh no, that's all her mother"
The guy said chuckling lightly, but sighing afterwards.
He looked at the girl, at himself, then back at me.
"Can I ask you to do one thing for me?"
  "...Sure"
  "Pray with me?.. Please..."
This might not surprise you, or maybe it will, but I don't know any lines or phrases from the bible. But it wasn't uncommon for creatures to ask me this.
I guess though I was quiet for to long and he smiled a bit, with tears still running down his face.
  "It's fine if-"
"I can't promise you that I'll be able to keep up..."
"That is ok...and thank you"
  "You're welcome..."
And with that the man began to pray-
(FYI I'm not Christian, this could be wrong. Sorry in advance.)
"Lord God,
you are attnetive to the voice
of our pleading.
Let us find in your Son
comfort in our sadness,
certainty in our doubt,
and courage to live through this hour.
Make our faith strong
through Christ our Lord.
Amen."
Though I didn't know the bible well, I did know that, that prayer was one for the mourners...the family... It's normally said during a funeral...during a time of loss...this was one of those times I suppose.
The man was still crying as he took his hand away from his daughter.
  "Are you ready?"
He didn't say anything and just nodded.
So I carefully grabbed his hand, and slowly his spirit faded away...and all that was left was his soul... I picked it up and as I did-*Crack* *SHATTER*
It broke...he was dead
I heard the daughter wail before I saw her mote of her tears. The doctor had stopped the CPR...the man was gone...
I just stood there for a moment, I didn't move or say anything. It's not like this was any different from what I normally did...but it just felt like it was.
Then I remember Geno, and I looked over at him.
He wasn't crying or doing much of anything he was like me, just still...just quiet.
I walked over to him, I didn't know what to say or what to do. For me this was a first.
I eventually ended up infront of him and just looked down at him as he looked up at me.
"I'm sorry...I didn't think you would have to see that so soon..."
  "It's... ..."
I knew it wasn't fine...so I didn't know really what it was. To me it was normal...to him it ended up being-
"It's normal...it shouldn't be...but it is... But that was just-"
  "Different?"
  "Yeah..."
He was still standing there...why?
  "You... You're still here..."
  "Yeah...why wouldn't I be?.."
  "...Hehe...no reason..."
Geno looked at me and grinned a bit.
"Do you really think you can get rid of me so easily?"
  "Wh-"
"Even if I wanted to leave I couldn't, and you should know that you don't scare me."
He looked at me dead in the eyes and said-
  "You really don't scare me"
He said that with a mix of his normal sarcasm and some seriousness. I couldn't tell if he was joking or what...but I had a feeling that it hopefully wasn't meant to offend me.
So I just made a joke to aid in lightening the mood.
"You sure? Because I can get pretty freaky in the-"
  "Ok quit while you're ahead."
Geno said again sounding like he normally did as he walked away from me.
I of course went after him.
"Hey come on, am I not aloud to make any jokes?"
  "Not when there like that"
  "But they aren't-"
  "No"
  "Fine...bossy"
Geno's face went red as he became angry
"Hey! I'm not bossy! Yeah maybe a bit sarcastic at times but I'm not some bossy ass bitch!"
"Well you're not a bitch but-"
  "God damnit Reaper!"
I realized he was actually upset with me so I laughed, I was really just kidding around and he probably knew that, but he was still mad at me.
"Calm down Geno, I'm just messing with you"
I was still laughing as Geno took a few deep breaths, he still looked pissed even though he had definitely calmed down a good amount then.
  "Yeah...I probably should've realized that..."
At that moment I stopped laughing, it just having don'd on me that I might've actually offended him.
I sighed now feeling bad about playing it off.
"Hey it's fine, it...probably wasn't a good time to joke around anyways... So how about we go do something."
  "Oh "haha" Reaper, very funny"
"No really, anything you want to do we can go and do it. I mean, you've never been on the surface before so there must be something you want to do up here."
I could tell that Geno was a bit surprised that I even offered to do anything after what had just happened, but none the less I saw him think about it then look at me and say.
"Right now...after all that...I just want a drink..."
"You sure that's what you want?"
"Right now...yeah, let's just say it's been a while since I've had one."
"Yeah I'd think so, come on I know a place you might like."
We walked off and eventually we made it to this little bar in the middle of town. I walked inside first and held the door open for Geno, it went as well as it did last time to say the least but that was plenty fine with me.
