may 2009
the almost five-year old girl had just gotten picked up from pre-school. what was different about this day was that both parents were in the car. on a typical day her mother would pick her up and they'd go home. she'd eat a snack then play or watch television until her father returned from work.

she was happy to see him earlier than usual. if only she knew what it meant.

the car ride was quiet, but not awkward. the family would arrive home and sit in the living room.

"Kito, we'd like to talk to you." her dad said. his tone did not sound happy which frightened her. she sat down next to him, with her mother sitting down on the other side.

"my work is transferring me..." he took a moment to think, "us." he smiled weakly in an attempt to reassure the young girl that was nervous at his serious tone.

"baby, we're going to have to move." her mom told her while placing her hand gently on her kids back. in response she looked up with big eyes, glossy from tears forming.

"when?" she mumbled.

"after school tomorrow, we will go to the airport. your father and i spent a lot of the day packing already. i wish we could have told you sooner baby, but we got such a short notice." she informed.

and with that, she headed upstairs. the familiar sound of her childhood bedroom's door opened. her room appeared bare, with boxes scattered. most shelves were empty, the only items remaining were essentials. the bed, sheets, comforter, pillows, a few stuffed toys and some clothing on hangers. otherwise, everything was packed.

she climbed into bed and got under the covers. allowing the warmth to take over her body. her eyes darted around the room, from box to box. black permanent marker labeled them. clothes. toys. miscellaneous.

thoughts flowed in about the days to come. tomorrow she would have to say goodbye to everything she knew and loved. the child didn't have many friends at school so leaving them wouldn't be hard. the most difficult part would be walking out on the life she knows. leaving her childhood home and allowing another family to inhabit it. the small pond down the street that she passed on the way to school and she'd often watch small fish splash around in. the sun on her skin as she laid across the hammock in the backyard strung up from two trees.

she could only hope that there was an easy adjustment to the new place. her thoughts calmed down as she focused on what it would be like. what is america like? the people? and with that, the small girl drifted off to sleep.

the school day came and went. not many people bothered to say bye. no one paid much attention to her in public spaces. she appeared "normal" and didn't have a flashy quirk. no one knew the true power she would hold.
