Lisa
The heating was on full blast, protecting us from the icy winds that are threatening to rattle my windows clean off their frames. Rosie supplied warm pastries and Jisoo brought in our coffee orders as we gossiped sat around the dining table, the familiar hum of their voices making me feel cozy inside.
We rarely hang out at mine anymore. I know Jisoo's been a little skeptical about coming here as she still sees it as Jennie's house in her head, but recently she's coming round to the idea and isn't so stiff when she walks in through the door. At least she's hitting up the right address, last week, Rose accidentally knocked next door out of habit, and was met with a very unhappy looking Sehun who was apparently in the middle of a home workout. Rosie wouldn't stop going on about his bone structure though, so something tells me she doesn't regret that mistake one bit.
"She has your eyes kid."
"You really think so?"
"Definitely." Chu rocked Daisy in her arms, a hint of a smile playing on her lips. "They're so wide and shiny. It's not fair."
Whilst Jisoo was distracted, Rose swiped the half eaten croissant off her plate, devouring it before she'd even noticed.
"So, about Saturday...are you guys still in?"
This weekend is Luca's sixth birthday party. We always celebrate it on the second Saturday in January, and I know he wants his gang to sleep over, like he does every year. A little part of me was hoping I'd be able to get some proper rest soon, but if this is what'll make the kid happy, I'm willing to postpone self-care for the time being.
"Sure, it's all Mai-Lee will go on about." Rosie complained, rubbing her temples. "I already ordered him his gift by the way, so please don't go buying any jumbo Lego dinosaur sets, I'd hate for there to be a double prezzie disaster."
"Noted, thanks Chae." She assured it was no trouble, wiping her hands of crumbs before taking the baby and having her turn at holding her. I couldn't help noticing Jisoo's silence as I waited for her to chip in. She's not usually this quiet. "Are you alright? If it's about Luca's gift, don't stress. So long as it's green, the kid will play with anything!" I shuddered at the memory of Luca being obsessed with some green slime Jennie brought him a few months back, unbeknownst to the fact he'd end up smearing it everywhere, staining the carpets, walls, curtains and my hair. It was a nightmare dealing with that fiasco.
"About that Lisa, look. I didn't wanna disappoint anyone but... it's Bobby. His Mother is, uh, sick and we promised we'd drive down and see her this weekend. I'm sorry, I didn't realise it'd be Luca's birthday that same day, but we'll drop something off on the way."
"Oh." I must admit, her words weren't what I was expecting and they stung. Probably more so because I knew she was lying.
Jisoo is the most straightforward person I know. She hates liars. I don't understand why she's being like this.
"What the hell?" Rosie pouted, her mouth in a frown before I could say any more. "Poor Luca's gonna be so upset. You know they have the most fun when it's the four of them, they're inseparable."
"I know, but my Mother-in-law-"
"Is this because of me and Jennie?"
"What?"
"Please. Just be honest with me Unnie." The endearment felt sour in my mouth because it's supposed to be used as a term of respect, but I hold so little for Jisoo these days.
I can't believe she's still acting so childishly.
Jen has done nothing but try to earn Chu's trust and make her feel reassured yet she's continuing to distance herself from any situation where she might have to see Jen and I together at the same time.
