Late at Night

"Women have some desires that only trust can reveal." – Jeff Hood

Glancing down at my wristwatch, it was just past seven when I finally finished going through the set of financial statements Kate sent me. I could have easily taken them home with me but let's be honest, I would have let them sit in my bag untouched until Monday morning when I was back at work.

Weekends were for sleeping in, and bottomless mimosas.

Logging off the computer, I grabbed my purse and shut off the lights in my office. As I stepped foot in the hallway, it was dead silent except for the constant whirring of the air conditioner and a warm light illuminating into the dimly lit hallway from one of the executive offices.

Looks like I'm not the only one burning the midnight oil – or so to speak.

Curious to see who was still here this late on a Friday night, I took the long way to the elevator – ensuring I would pass by the open door and sneak a peek inside.

But you know what they say, curiosity kills the cat.

As I got closer to the open door, the gold nameplate hanging on the door became clear.

Ethan Thomas.

Ethan was hunched over his desk, with one hand rummaging through the mountain of paperwork scattered around, and the other holding the phone receiver. His once brown oak desk was now entirely covered in white, and it looked like a tornado had swiped through there.

He didn't see me stop in the doorway, and when it became clear that he wasn't going to look up any time soon, I cleared my throat – gaining his immediate attention.

"Let me call you back." He said to the person on the other line, hanging up and focusing his attention on me.

"McKenzie." His lips twitched. "What are you doing here so late?"

"I could ask you the same thing," I replied, shifting my weight from one foot to the other. I know I said I wasn't going to wear heels ever again, but that was a lie. I had on a pair of high-waisted blue jeans with a gray tank top tucked in at the front and a dark navy blazer that I paired with a pair of nude stilettos.

They say beauty hurts, and stilettos are a perfect example of why that saying is true. Plus, heels make any outfit ten times sexier, and I was too stubborn to let that go for a pair of flats.

"Contrary to popular belief, this place doesn't run itself." Ethan rolled his eyes, standing up to his full height.

"Really?" I cocked an eyebrow. "I thought you just snap your fingers and the fairy godmother made it all happen."

"Sarcastic as always, McKenzie." He continued to hold my gaze.

"Annoying as ever, Ethan." I mimicked pushing myself off the doorframe and approaching his desk so that I could take a peek at all the papers. "Did a tornado pass through here?" I asked, setting my purse down into the the chair in front of his desk and picking up a random file –scanning it.
