(Maddie's POV)
I finish straightening the last piece of hair and put down my flat iron.
"Mom," I yell from upstairs to the kitchen downstairs where my mother is. "It's almost time to go to school. Can you make me a bowl of Mini Wheats?"
"Sure," she responded.
Sure, in this first scene, you might think of me as a normal teenage girl. But really, I'm not as happy as I seem. Once I get to school, you'll realize what I mean.
I walk downstairs and pull out a chair for me to sit in. My mother hands me my cereal and spoon, and I start eating. 5 minutes pass, and my bowl is empty. As I grab my bag, my sleeves roll down making the cuts on my arms visible. I quickly roll my sleeve back up before anyone can see it.
"Mom, you ready?" I say as I open the door.
"Yeah, sweetie. Go get in the car," she says.
I walk outside, open the car door and step inside the passengers seat. I quickly turn on the radio as my mom gets in and turns on the car. Music can always make me a bit happier.
10 minutes goes by quickly, and I'm at school. I put my hood up.
"Maddie, honey, why did you put your hood up?" My mom says as I open the door.
"I - uh - I saw on - um - the weather station that it was supposed to rain soon," I said as fast as I could. It was obviously a lie. I was really putting my hood up so no one saw my face.
"Um - alright Maddie. Love you!" She says.
"Love you too, Mom," I then see the big blue doors of TreeWood High. Weird name, right? I grasp my hand around the metal handle and pull the doors open. A "whoosh" of immature high schoolers are filling the halls up with loud voices and big backpacks. I try to squeeze my way through the huge school while hearing horrible names that my bullies call me. They're names are Katie, Ashley, Jenna, Sarah, Josie, and many more. A few of my bullies are boys, too.
"Maddie Dempsey?" I hear as Im moving as fast as I can into the classroom.
"Here!" I say, as I walk right to my desk. A boy catches my eye, who's looking right at me as Im walking inside.
Chris Johnson. My lifelong crush, who really, I have no chance with. The only one who knows about my crush on him is my best friend, Kelley Smith. She is not only my best friend, but she is my only friend.
Chris has only talked to me a few times in my life before, and that was this year. I don't like to say he is my friend, because if I did, some way he would find out I am calling him "my friend" and would get weirded out. At least that's what I think.
"Nice one, Dempsey," Chris looks over with a smirk and says.
"Thanks Chris," I say sarcastically, obviously with a smile, and look back over to my notebook on my desk. Did Chris Johnson just talk to me? And he was the first one to say something? Oh my goodness. Someone pinch me!
"Maddie! Pay attention!" I hear Mr. Frier say.
"Sorry," I say back.
After the first period is over, some of my bullies, Jenna, Ashley, and Justin (Justin is one of my boy bullies.) start walking towards me. I quickly pick up my pace as they do too. I don't remember what class Im going to because I'm too scared of being hurt. I turn around for a moment to check where they are, and I notice they are still following me. I run into the nearest girls bathroom and go into the middle stall. I hear the door slam open.
"Maddie, where are you?" I think Jenna says. I couldn't really recognize who's voice went with who's. I quickly stand on top of the toilet so if they looked down they wouldn't see my feet.
"Maddie! Get out here!" I think Justin says. Why is Justin in here? This is a girls bathroom! I keep myself quiet and even try to breathe very slowly. Then I hear the door open again. I don't know if it's them leaving or someone coming in.
"What are you three doing in here? And why is there a boy in this bathroom?! Get out now!" It was a teacher. I run out of the stall as soon as I hear them leave.
"We're they trying to bully you?" The teacher asks me.
"Um - er - no," I say as fast as I can.
"Are you sure? You can tell me, you won't be in trouble," she says, emphasizing on the "won't".
"Im sure. I was just going to the bathroom when I heard them come in. I should be getting to class," I say, trying not to sound scared, because in my head, I was scared to death.
I walk out of the bathroom and head to my next class.
The whole next class I was thinking about the bathroom incident, and Chris talking to me. 55 minutes go by, and it's time for my next class.
By the end of the day, I run to my moms car, where my mother was waiting for me in the school pick up loop.
"How was your day?" She asked, as I opened the door, and sat down in the passengers seat.
"Great!"
