HAPPY READING 🥰
Sean Britto
I drive over to Brian's place because I have to see Steph. I'm already missing him.
The moment I walk through the door he comes running toward me, shouting "Dad!" with that excitement that makes everything else in the world fade away.
I scoop him up into my arms and spin him around, his laughter filling the room. For a while we run around the living room with Jordan, playing and shouting like a couple of wild kids. Steph's little legs try to keep up with us, his squeals echoing through the house.
Eventually all the running and screaming catches up to him.
Steph collapses against me, half-asleep, his tiny arms wrapped loosely around my neck.
I smile.
"Looks like someone ran out of batteries," Brian laughs.
I carry Steph to the couch and let him rest against my chest while the adults settle down to talk.
Brian, Jinette, and I spend the next hour catching up-talking about work, family, and everything that's been happening lately. It feels good to sit with old friends and forget the chaos of life for a little while.
By the time I leave their house, night has already fallen.
The streets are quiet as I drive home.
Steph is half asleep when we arrive. I carry him inside, tuck him into his bed, and watch him for a moment before turning off the light.
My chest tightens slightly.
Being away from him, even for a short time, always reminds me how much he means to me.
Once I'm sure he's settled, I head to my room.
I take a long shower, letting the hot water wash away the exhaustion of the day. When I step out, I pull on a pair of sweatpants and climb into bed.
My phone is lying on the mattress where I tossed it earlier.
I pick it up and turn it on.
A few messages appear on the screen. I scroll through them lazily until one name catches my attention.
Annabelle.
I open it.
Hey, did you get home safe? I didn't hear from you. I was a little worried, but if you're with Steph I understand.
Immediately it hits me.
I never called her.
I never even sent a text letting her know I got home.
I sigh and run a hand through my hair.
I'm sorry, beautiful lady. I meant to call, but I went straight to Brian's. I had to see Steph. I didn't mean to worry you.
While waiting for her response, I reply to another message from my brother telling me he's coming up to New York for business and plans to drop by.
A few minutes later my phone vibrates again.
Annabelle.
It's okay. How's Steph? I miss him.
I smile slightly.
He asked about you. I told him we'll visit you next week.
A moment later another message appears.
Sean, thank you for today-and for talking with my parents, even though they nagged you with all those questions.
I stare at the screen for a second.
