Chapter 8
I didn't want to go back home. I didn't want to part with him. This was insane, but I couldn't imagine not seeing Ryan again.
"What if I deceived you?!" I said before I could think it through. "Perhaps I'm just pretending to be innocent. Perhaps I'm the drug dealer you're looking for."
The smile died on his face, and he moved back.
"Why are you doing this?" He asked. "Get dressed. We're leaving now." Saying that he put my clothes on the bed and left. I exhaled and tears filled my eyes. Why was I feeling like this? I will return home. Wasn't this what I prayed for? I should be thankful that he believed me and that he was trying to help me. Why was I feeling so sad?I put on my clothes, folded his clothes neatly, and then I went to the kitchen. He was speaking to someone on his mobile and he sounded rather angry.
"What do you mean, you can't? You said you were going to help me!"
He kept pacing around nervously. "I know what the plan was, but we've been fooled. She's not the person we want......... Yeah, I'm sure...... Can't you just take my word for it?"
I sat on a chair in the corner and waited for him to finish.
"No. I can't let her go.... What do you mean, why? What will happen to her?... I know it's not my business... I know what we agreed. You help me and I help you." He cut off and looked at me. "How long have you been here?"
"Enough to hear you arguing with whoever was over the phone!"
"Dammit!" He raked his hands through his hair. He threw the phone on the table.
"I gather that our trip to the airport will not happen."
"Why do I get the impression that you're almost happy about it?"
I smiled and shrugged. Yes, I was happy to spend some more time with him.
"So now what shall we do?" I asked when he said nothing.
"I'm thinking."
"Why don't you just take me to the police? I explain what happened."
He shook his head. "I'm afraid it's not that easy. The police have these chats. They won't believe you."
"But how can you be so sure? I'm sure the real Catherine Mitchell looks different from me.""We don't know. No one knows how she looks. We're not even sure if Catherina Mitchell is her actual name. No one ever saw her. She's been taking part in acts of terrorism and drug smuggling for the past four years. That's all we know. She could be anyone."
"But maybe if I explain. My parents are good people. They can contact the American embassy. I'm sure they can help."
"You have no passport. Nothing to prove your identity. What I'm thinking is that the real Catherina Mitchell must have been on the same flight as you. She must have used a fake passport. Dammit, I don't even remember who was on that flight. My attention was all reserved for you.""Well, I do. There was a class of children, a woman behind me, and a few elderly people." I replied.
"There might have been more in the other classes." He reminded me. "Cathy, I'm sure you weren't robbed by coincidence. What did they want your passport for? And your mobile? There must be something going on, Cathy. They want to use your identity. They want to blame you for whatever they are planning."
My head was whirling and suddenly I felt sick.
"Is there a way I can get out of this mess?"
"There is only one way to do it. We have to find the real Catherina Mitchell and have her arrested."
