Chapter 38

Today is Finley's 11th Birthday. When he came down to the kitchen, there were loads of presents on the kitchen table. "Hey, our birthday boy is awake, Happy Birthday buddy." Jay smiled and hugged Finley. "Are they all for me?" Finley asked. "As far as I know, it's only one of us birthday today." Kelly smiled and gave him a kiss. After breakfast, Finley sat down on the couch and opened his presents. He got new soccer boots and ice skates, new soccer and hockey jerseys, Legos, a skateboard and a new bike. "Here, I thought you were old enough for this now." Kelly smiled, handing him a smartphone and a laptop. "Cool, thanks." Finley said, hugging his brother. "You're welcome, buddy." Kelly smiled. "Okay, now it's my turn, here, we have another surprise for you." Stella said, handing him a package. Finley started to shake the package. "Wait, is it fragile?" Finley asked. Stella shook her head and leaned her head on Kelly's shoulder. Finley shook the package, but couldn't guess what it is. When he opened the package, he froze. "Are you serious?" Finley asked, excited. Kelly and Stella smiled and nodded. In the package there were a picture and a note that said: Brother, you were always there for me, my protector, who saw me through my failures, helping me go for my dreams, my shoulder I needed to cry on, my rock in life, but calling you a brother just isn't enough – you're now going to be called an uncle.

In the afternoon, Finley made a meet up with his friends at the skate park in Grant Park. "Hey, Happy Birthday Fin." his friends greeted. "Thanks guys." Finley smiled. "What did you get?" Tucker asked. "More than my previous 10 Birthdays combined." Finley said. "You've never got birthday presents before?" Ryan asked. "Yes, I got birthday presents before, but just some sweets, but my siblings always took them away from me." Finley said. "And from Kelly?" Darius asked. "I left the presents I got from Kelly with him so I could claim at least a little something for myself." Finley said. "Is there anything else?" Kyle asked. "Yes, but I don't know if I can tell you yet." Finley said. "We won't tell anyone, we promise." Lucas said, putting his hand on Finley's shoulder. "Okay, but you really have to promise me, not to tell anyone, not even your parents." Finley said. His friends nodded and Finley took out the ultrasound picture. "What's that?" Ryan asked. "This is an ultrasound picture." Darius said. Finley smiled and nodded. "Stella is pregnant." Finley smiled. "Hey, congratulations, you're going to be an uncle." Tucker said happily. "Yeah thanks, but it's very early in her pregnancy and no one else knows it yet." Finley said. "What about 51?" Kyle asked. Finley shook his head and put the picture back in his pocket. A few hours later, the boys left for home. "What are you going to do tonight?" Kyle asked. "We're going to Molly's tonight; they must have prepared something for me." Finley said. "Well then, we wish you a lot of fun." Darius laughed and everyone went home.

In the evening, everyone met at Molly's. Finley was sitting at the table with Kelly, Matt and Chief Boden when Stella and Gabby came with a birthday cake. Everyone sang Happy Birthday to Finley. "Now you can make a wish." Sylvie smiled. Finley thought for a moment and blew out the candles. They ate cake, talked and had a good time. Kelly kissed Finley on his head and stood up. "What are you going to do?" Finley asked. "You'll see it soon enough." Kelly whispered in his ear. Kelly went to the bar and took by the Stella hand. Finley knew what's coming and tried not to notice. "Stella Kidd, you are the strongest, most self-confident and sometimes most stubborn person I've ever met, I'm happy to have you by my side, you are the love of my life and I want to spend the rest of my life with you, that's why I ask you here and now, in front of all our friends and family, Stella Kidd, will you make me the happiest man and marry me?" Kelly asked, getting down on his knee. "Yes, I do." Stella said with tears in her eyes. Kelly put the ring on her hand and kissed her. While everyone was congratulating them, Finley got up and went outside. "Have anyone seen Finley?" Kelly asked. Everyone shook their heads. Kelly grabbed his jacket and went outside, where he found him in front of Molly's. Kelly sat down with him and put his jacket around his shoulders. "Hey, are you, all right?" Kelly asked. "Yeah, just needed some fresh air." Finley said, trying to smile. Kelly eyed him. "It's all going to change now, isn't it?" Finley asked. Kelly put his arm around Finley's shoulders. "The only thing that will change is, that you won't be the youngest at home anymore, but otherwise, everything will stay the same." Kelly smiled. "I have something to tell you." Finley said. "And what?" Kelly asked. "Promise me you won't get mad at me." Finley said and Kelly nodded. "I've had these pictures in my head for weeks now and they just don't want to go away." Finley said. "What pictures?" Kelly asked. "The pictures from my early life, about mom and dad and how they treated me and from my siblings and the shot in the basement." Finley said quietly, tears rolling down his face. Kelly hugged him. "Are you two all right?" Stella asked. Finley wiped the tears from his face and Kelly stroked through his hair. "Yes, everything's all right." Finley replied. Stella eyed him. "He just had a little flashback." Kelly said. "Do you have that often?" Stella asked and Finley nodded. "Did you know?" Kelly asked. "I thought something was going on, but I didn't know what it was." Stella said. "Why didn't you tell me?" Kelly asked. "Please don't argue, I don't want you to break up." Finley said, wiping the tears from his face. "Listen, we're not going to break up, we're just worried about you and we want you to feel comfy and save." Stella smiled and hugged him. When they got back inside, there were 6 small packages at Finley's place. "Are they for me?" Finley asked. Finley opened the presents and the result was scale models of Truck 81, Squad 3, Engine 51, Battalion 25, Ambulance 61 and a police car. "Cool thanks guys, but don't come up with me, telling you which's my favorite car because I don't tell you guys." Finley joked and everyone laughed.
