They should have gotten their day, but sadly things never seem to work out the way you want them to.
"I'm starting to consider your idea of not going.." Bucky sniggered, opening the door to their cheap little apartment.
"I'm on board, I'll drive the getaway car!" Sofia excitedly yelled, following him through the door.
"I'd be charged, we would have to go on the run.." Bucky laughed back, grabbing his bags and placing them on the fold out sofa.
"Well I'll run with you! We can go to Switzerland, or Ireland! There neutral countries!" She responded, fully on board with the idea and trying to convince him to stay.
"The war will be over soon, when it's over we can get married!" He said, taking her hand and attempting to calm her down.
"But what happens if you don't come-"
"Don't go there, I will be back and I will marry you!" He said, trying to convince her.
"Do you swear?" She asked, needing that confrontation.
"I swear, I swear I'll come home to you and we will have our wedding.."
Lie.
"Alright, then I'll wait for you.." She said, wrapping her arm around him.
"I'll end the war myself if it means returning to you.."
It was a quiet night, nothing was really said. Steve and Bucky had already said their goodbyes earlier that day, so it was just the two of them.
So they lay in bed, speaking of anything that came to mind, anything that they could possibly have to talk about in the following few months.
She knew she could speak to him in letter format, but it would never be the same. They had their best conversations in the flesh, not through parchment.
The thought was slowly dawning on Bucky that he wouldn't be able to see Sofia's face for who knows how long. He had that picture he took of her on the day he asked her to marry him. Although that would never be the same.
He had the memories. He had the need to come home in one piece for her. It was always going to be for her.
She had the photographs as well. She shared the memories. She wanted him to stay with her, she would so anything. She would move mountains, if it meant that he would stay in that bed with her for many more nights to come.
"It's late, we both need sleep.." Bucky said, still laying beside her as he traced his finger along her hand.
"I'm only going to see Howard tomorrow, your going to war. I want to stay awake and take in every second that I have with you.." She said, although it was clear to both of them that she was on the brink of falling asleep.
"You need shut eye, your cranky in the morning.." He said, followed by a small laugh.
"I need to stay with you, I'm not gonna lose a single-" yawn, "second"
"Your exhausted.." He said.
"I know.." She laughed back.
"So sleep, Howard won't be impressed if you show up cranky because I made you slay up" Bucky said, cuddling her even tighter.
"I couldn't care what Howard thinks when it comes to my mood. He's the reason I can't follow you to the front line!" She said, sitting up slightly to look at him.
"And I'm forever thankful to him for that.." He said, sitting up with her.
"I could handle myself in battle.." She said, making a small gun with her hand and a 'pew, pew' sound effect.
"I will sleep better knowing your in a lab, not a trench.." He said, his head dropping back into the pillow.
"I could! You don't need to worry about me!" She laughed, her head meeting the pillow as well.
"It's my job to worry about you, I love you too much to not worry.."
"Aw, you love me!" She giggled.
"That part wasn't clear?" He said, placing a small kiss on her forehead.
It was a night of fun, a sleepless night. In the future she would be glad that she decided not to sleep, so would he.
It was their last night together. One of the their best nights together.
