As Nicole and I walk down the stairs, I can't help but feel like something isn't quite right.
"Who am I-I mean- she marrying?" I ask Nicole because curiosity got the better of me.
"I believe you are familiar with the groom. Take a look." Nicole responds as she points to the end of the aisle.I slowly take my eyes off Nicole's face and look towards the groom who looks slightly familiar, but he had his back to be so I couldn't really tell. "I don't real-"
"Sh. Just wait." But even as she is saying those words the unknown groom turns around.
"Oh my word! Jamie Keller! Why would I ever marry him?"
"Because this is a different timeline remember."
"So he wasn't mean to her on our first day of middle school?"
"Did I ever say that? No, to answer your question. Sadly that is still the same."
"Then why would I ever marr-"
"If you will listen I will explain. In this timeline, you guys end up going to the same college, but this time they had spent two years at a community college first while you went straight to an university. So, the roles were very much reversed and multiplied when he came to you on his first day asking for help. The rest is more or less history."
"Wow, do they remember middle school?"
"To them, middle school was a decade ago. So, it's pointless to bring up such things. You'll see."
"I hope you're right. I'm hoping I forget a lot of things."
"You will. Oh, look here comes the wedding party."
Nicole was right for when I turned around I saw the groomsmen bowing to one of my bridesmaids before escorting her down the sandy beach. Two by two, the wedding party came down by couples until it was time for my best friend to come down, but instead of being greeted by the best man she walked by herself which I probably made sure she had this moment. She has always been a strong independent woman. It makes me so proud to see that time has not changed that.
Then suddenly the music gets louder and everyone stands up as it's time for to see older me walk down to the groom. First I see my father offering him hand to the white tent set up that all the bridesmaids had been coming out of. Then, a hand appears from the tent to take my father's outreached hand, and slowly the bride everyone had been waiting for comes out of the tent.
The second she is out, there are gasps and whispers talking about how breathtaking she is. For most of these people, this is the first time that they have seen her try to impress people with her beauty. Our usual style of t-shirts, jeans, and usual ponytail is replaced with a dream wedding dress, my mother's homemade wedding veil, and a fake smile plastered on her face.
To anyone else, I don't think they even noticed, but being that I'm looking at my future me, I could tell. It was the nervous smile of being in the center of attention. No, it was the smile that I always had on my face whenever I knew in my gutt that whatever I was doing was wrong. I look over to my father, and he had his focused face on which could only mean that he was watching the bride out of the corner of his eye. Waiting for anything to tell him that she doesn't want to do this anymore. He also knew.
I travel my eyes up her face. Her eyes are searching every face looking for someone is particular. I didn't even realize that she could be looking for me until her eyes lock on, and relief floods her face.
"Thank you for being here." other me says in my mind.
"Why do you look unhappy? Why are you still walking down the aisle if you have that expression on your face?" I say back still staring, but she had already turned her eyes back to her groom.
"Let me show you."
