Years have passed and now me and laurence are teens, and until now we are still friends, it's quite shocking for me, that a mermaid and a humans friendship would last this long.

I went back to the swamp that we first met. I didn't tell my parents about my encounter with a human, because they might get panic and think of laurence as a threat to us mermaids, I didn't want that to happen so I didn't tell them.

Whenever me and laurence want to meet up again, I would have to sneak out or even tell lies to my parents, I would even sometimes skip mer classes, so that I could see laurence again.

I finally got to the swamp and I stay hidden until he shows up. Oh how I hope he shows up, its been days since I last saw him, I wonder what his doing now, did he ate human food? Play human games? Oh! How I wanna do human things too!

I have stay hidden for a total 10 minutes now, and he still hasn't show up. He promised me that he will be here on time, what's taking him so long?

3 minutes pass by, and finally his here. He crouched down, and looks around he calls my name and I emerged from the water. I smiled and swam closer to him.

"Hey, laurence how are you? Haven't seen you in a while, what's up?" I said excited on the stories he has to say.

"Ohhh.. You know.." He said, with a bit of color pink on his cheek. Why is his cheek turning pink?

"Hmmm.. Come on, you can tell me!" I said curious on what he meant.

"Its just that. I GOT INTO GUARD ACADEMY!" He said, with his tone all excited and a bit loud.

I moved a bit forward happy for him but...

"Cool! What's a guard academy?"

"Oh! Its a place where I learn how to be a knight!" He said putting his right hand on his chest.

"Oh! So your gonna carry swords all day?" I said, not too sure what I said was right.

"You could say that. But really, the important part is to protect other humans, from danger!" He said.

"Oh! Its just like ours! We also have guards or maybe the king has, but they're are some patrolling the sea beds." I said.

"I see. Oh! And also-"

"Also?"

"Girls have been talking to me!" He said, his cheeks full of color pink.

"Girls? But aren't you talking to one right now? You know, I am a girl." I said, not sure what he meant about ' Girls have been talking to me'. That doesn't make sense, I'm his friend and Im a girl.

"Well yes, you are a girl. But what I meant is human girls!"

"Human girls? What does my looks or my tail has to do with 'girls have been talking to me'. Me and those girls are clearly the same." I said, with a bit of angry tone on my voice.

"Y/n. Your different, your a mermaid and they're humans." he said.

"And what does being a mermaid has to do with that?! You already have me, right?" I said, my brows furrowed.

"Y/n, your my friend and those girls I don't look at them as friends. I look at them as... What do you call it.. Womans! Yes womans!"

"Womans?! You know that I will also turn into a mer woman sooner or later you know that?!" I said, this time getting angry

"What's wrong with you Y/n, you were never angry with me before, why now?" He said.

Me too, I wonder why I got angry. I sighed and looked at the water.

"Laurence, have you heard of a tale about a mermaid who falls inlove with a human?" I said.

"Yeah, I've heard that tale, and the ending was sad. The mermaid turned into sea foam."

"Wha- what if.." I bit my lip, before I could continue my sentence.

"What if I tell you that I fell inlove with a human?" I said looking straight into his eyes.

His eyes widened. "Y/n, what do you mean?"

I sighed once again. "I love you laurence, not as a friend but, as a lover." I said my cheeks all pink and hot.

While I was looking at him. His expression changed, it changed into confusion? Anger? Sadness? I dont understand, this is not what I imagined.

"Y/n, I can't return your feelings.." He said looking away.

My heartache when I hear those words.

"Wha-wh.. Why not?" I said swimming around a bit to look at his face.

"Y/n, just like from the story. Something might happen to you, if we became lovers." He said turning to me with a sad expression.

"N-no. Nothing will happen to me! In the story a sea witch did that to her! There's no such thing as sea witch laurence!" I said.

"Still Y/n! What if one day, your people found out about us. What if one day a human sees us together and use me to get you! Haven't you thought that one day, we will have to be separated." He said.

A wet thing ran down on my face. What is this? Why is there water on my eyes?

" Laurence, No one would found out. I would be careful I would be cautious of my surrounding. I will do anything for us to not be separated, I will-"I said, few more water streamed down my face.

" Stop y/n! Listen to yourself! Your only gonna get yourself in danger! And I don't want that to happen to you! "He said.

" I think.. We should not see each other again. "He said.

" Wha-what? Not see each other again? Like never see each other ever? "

" Yes. " he said.

More water ran down my face, and I started to pour more water from my eyes.

" Th-then, if we're gonna be separated. I want you to tell me something. Be honest ok? " I said looking into his emerald eyes. He nodded.

I swallowed my saliva." Do you love me?"

He didn't say anything for a minute. He then said-

"No. I don't" He said.

I sobbed and started to have hiccups, I look at him, his eyes still looking at me.

"Laurence, Im gonna do something, please let me do this." I said. He nodded his expression telling me that he doesn't know what im gonna do.

I swam really close to him, put my hands on a surface pulled my whole body and gave him a kiss. I closed my eyes, and 5 seconds have passed. I pulled away and quickly swam back to the kingdom, crying.

It hurts, my heart hurts. I swam straight to my house, swam pass my parents who are shock on why I was back so early from mer class.

I swam straight to my bed, and cried on my pillow. I cried, and cried, and cried. Knowing that I couldn't see him again, and that he doesn't feel the same way. It hurts, I hate this.

I hate that my heart is aching. My parents swam to my room, and saw me crying, they sat at the edge of the bed, my mom patting my head my father just sat and waited for me to finish.

And from that day, I didn't see laurence ever again. I keep coming to the same swamp, waited for few hours and he didn't show up. So he mean it, he doesn't wanna see me ever again. I swam back to the kingdom, and never came back to that same swamp ever again.
