"Mother she's waking!" A muddled voice squealed happily through my haze. I groaned and barely registered two little hands cupping my cheeks.
"Mama...?"
I forced my eyes open and was met with the most beautiful sea-green eyes I'd ever seen. I cracked a small smile at him, not noticing the tall looming figure bend through the doorway. "Hey, kiddo."
Michael laughed and playfully squeezed my cheeks in his tiny hands. I couldn't help but laugh with him, ignoring the pain in my abdomen. I stopped laughing when a deep, sultry voice rang out through the room.
"Well well, to whom do I owe the pleasure?" I looked way up and was met with beautiful golden eyes. A small gasp escaped my lips as I realized how truly tall the woman was.
I cleared my throat, not taking my eyes off of her even as Michael continued to entertain himself by squeezing my cheeks. I could hear giggling coming from behind the towering woman as he did so. "Uh hi, it's nice to meet you. I'm Y/n L/n and this is my son, Michael."
I momentarily tore my eyes away from the woman as I looked around for the first time and saw that I was in a large room on a big bed. I continued, meeting her burning gaze again, "I'm not completely sure how I got here, miss. I only remember being attacked by hunters."
The woman hummed and nodded toward Michael. I didn't understand why she did that until a redhead appeared out of a swarm of bugs and picked him up from my bedside, taking him out of the room while he giggled with her. My eyes followed them until they disappeared from my sight. I looked up at the woman as she started to speak.
"I am Alcina Dimitrescu, the Lady of this castle. Since you are a guest in my home, you may refer to me by my first name." Alcina sat in a big chair off to the side of the bed and sent a steady glare my way. "And now that we have introductions out of the way, just what is it you are doing in my village, pet?"
I frowned and tried sitting up, but failed miserably. "I...hunters have been after us because of what we are. We needed to escape them and this was the farthest I could afford to safely travel. If you don't want us here, then we'll leave."
Cold amusement flickered in Alcina's golden orbs. "Not in your condition, you'll not. You are free to stay in my home as you heal. However, I have rules that must be followed at all times."
I nodded and stayed silent, patiently waiting for her to continue.
"Good, I only have three. The first one being to not leave the castle grounds at night as there are dangers that I cannot protect you from outside of my property. My brother is too foolish to control his own dogs and I would rather your son not get eaten by them, as Daniela has grown rather attached to the boy. The second being that my word is absolute. Do not question me or my decisions and lastly, no helping any maidens that run amuck through my castle. They run for a reason and my daughters must entertain themselves every now and then. Do I make myself clear, pet?"
The entire time I listened, her burning gaze never left mine and I refused to cower. Alcina was truly beautiful and I found myself quickly enraptured by her, even though I could clearly see the predator-like hunger emanating from her pores as she stared me down with a smirk.
I sighed and nodded my head, bowing it a little. "Yes, my Lady." I snorted when her nostrils flared. "You hungry?"
A deep rumble vibrated through the woman's chest and into my bones. Her eyes glowed a dangerous red as she stood to her full height and glared at me. "Do not tempt me, daywalker. You may smell and look oh so delicious, but my daughters should have known better than to bring unknowns into this castle."
I glared right back at her, seemingly throwing the matriarch off. "Yeah, well I never asked to be taken here, Alcina. However, I am thankful for you and your daughters allowing me and Michael to stay while I recover. While I have a slight idea as to what you four are and what you do to survive, this is very kind of you to do for 'unknowns'."
Alcina's eyes softened a little and turned back to their original gold. She still held the glare. "If you betray me and my family, best believe your life will be forfeit."
I sighed once she left the room, feeling even more tired than ever. What would it take to show her that I truly meant no harm? I turned on my side and closed my eyes, falling into a deep sleep that, as always, was riddled with terrible nightmares.
Was it normal to feel like I was being watched in the very depths of my mind?
