There's always a chance, right?
That slim chance.
It's all about slim chances now.
{Two days later}
"We're facing a long, hard journey. Maybe even harder than I can imagine. But it can't be harder than our journey's been so far, can it? 125 miles, that's what lies ahead. There's just a few of us now, so we've got to stick together. Fight for each other. Be willing to lay down our lives if it comes to that. It's the only chance we got..."
After CDC, the group considered the nursing home before making sure they wanted to drive for so long but they regretted that decision the moment they stepped foot on that nursing home.
Death.
Sorrow and grief filled the air.
Countless bodies on the floor, a few walkers feasting on the corpses left.
Supplies, all gone.
After walking around and investigating the scene, Daryl determined that the Vatos were attacked and had all their supplies scavenged.
"Fort Benning, it is." Rick assured Shane and they drove away from the ghost city.
The highway.
Dale slowly brought the RV to a stop.
"Why are we stopping?" Smith came behind the driver's seat, her eyes investigating the surroundings, hoping to find a reason. "Don't tell me it's that hose again."
"No, it's not. But I can't get pass, the road's blocked by all these cars." Dale reasoned and Daryl's bike appeared from in between the cars. He stopped right beside the driver's seat window. "See a way through?"
Daryl just nodded towards the cars and Dale took that as a "Go."
"Uh, maybe we should just go back." Glenn advised, analysing the map he had in hands. "There's an interstate--"
"We can't spare the fuel." Dale shut him down.
The RV followed right behind Daryl and his bike. There were a lot of cars, even upside down ones and it required a certain level of driving skills to get through with a van. If you looked closely, you could even see some old corpses inside the cars, some even kind of [deformed] by the hot Georgia sun.
A high pitched noise sounded and white smoke floated in front of the van.
That damn hose...
Dale stopped the RV, making the rest of the cars behind it stop as well.
"Oh, it's just a small matter of time of being stuck in the middle of nowhere with the hope of..."
"Ain't gonna find a radiator hose here."
"There's a bunch of other stuff we can find." Daryl affirmed and started looking in the cars for stuff that could be useful.
"I can siphon more fuel from these cars for a start." T-Dog assured the group.
"Maybe some water?" Andrea hoped.
"Food."
"This is a graveyard." Lori barged in, offended that they wanted to scavenge their surroundings. "I don't know how I feel about this..." She breathed out.
"Lori, I'm sorry, but the apocalypse doesn't seem like the right time to think like that." Smith placed her left hand on her hip and leaned on the car Daryl was scavenging. Lori meant to respond but Smith spoke first. "I don't mean to dismiss you but look at us. If not here, then where do you think we'll find supplies, food, water? Basic needs for survival? Think about the kids for a second." That shut Lori up. Well, more or less, she didn't say anything else to oppose what they were doing but that didn't mean that she didn't stick to her own opinion.
Dale and Glenn occupied their time with the RV, hoping to fix that hose, Daryl, Shane and Smith scavenged the cars willingly, while Lori not so much. She did look for stuff in the cars, but with a pained expression, she felt bad for doing it and that almost made Smith herself feel bad. She didn't disrespect Lori in any way but her extraverted feeling won over her.
"Smith!" Rick called in a panicked whisper, signalling her to get down. She did as she was told and hid under the car she scavenged just moments ago.
Soon enough, the snarling and moaning of the dead walked through. She knew they couldn't see her, or that they were not smart enough to check for flesh under the cars, but the paranoia crept in anyway, making her panic over a fake scenario where she was pulled by her feet and devoured, of which the chances of happening were close to zero.
A few minutes passed, which felt like endless hours until the herd had fully gone through. Or so they thought...
She didn't move. Didn't dare to even think about getting back on her feet.
Suddenly, a high-pitched scream went through Smith's eardrums. Sophia had shifted to get away from the car but was surprised by an unnoticed walker, who spotted her and quickly tried to get her. Sophia ran into the forest with two walkers behind her, soon followed by Rick.
He came back a few minutes later, empty handed, no Sophia in sight. He signalled the group and a few of them understood that he needed backup. So, Daryl, Smith and Shane followed him back into the woods.
