-"So I met this Governor. Sat with him for quite a while. He wants the prison. He wants us gone. Dead, he wants us dead. We're going to war."-
"The group's taking it as well as can be expected." Smith informed Rick as they stood outside in the sunlight. "Merle and Michonne are convinced we should hit first. Carol and Hershel think we should take our chances out there on the road."
"And what do you think?"
"I don't know anymore." She sighed deeply.
"I know I said we'd have a council. We will but I don't think it's the right time right now. We have to fight."
"I know. We're in this together. So if we stay and fight, so be it."
"He gave me a choice. A way out."
"What does he want?"
"Michonne."
"He'll kill her."
"And then kill us anyway. Or maybe he won't. Maybe we make the deal and this is all over. "
"Why didn't you tell them?"
"'Cause they need to be scared. It's the only way they'll accept it."
"We can't do that, Rick."
"Maybe we'll have to." He finalised, walking away.Smith paced like a ghost around the courtyard of the prison. She knew they would fight. The Governor wouldn't stop until they were dead on the ground and even though she wanted to leave, Rick was right, it wasn't like before. With Judith crying every couple hours and Hershel with only one leg, they wouldn't last three weeks out there.
She entered cellblock C and was met by... arguing. Again. It seemed it was all that happened anymore. Arguing, fighting and conflict. Every hour of of day.
She walked swiftly to where the voices where coming from.
"Man, what does that have to do with anything?" A raspy voice shouted out.
"'Cause this is all his fault, he started this!" Maggie yelled back.
"Man, again?! Thought we were over this bullshit. Told you Merle's staying here, there's nothing you can do about it."
"Now, why's ol' Merle always brought to the conversation?" Daryl's brother questioned ironically as his hands hang in the air as if he was being falsely accused.
Daryl was about to storm off but stopped just for a split second he looked behind and locked eyes with her. Smith stood there with her eyebrows lifted in shock.
It seemed Maggie and Glenn still weren't over Merle being around.
As he stormed up the steel stairs, Smith followed carefully behind. She knew it wasn't going to be a calm conversation after he stormed off like that. He was angry and anxious, but she would do her best to avoid any shouting and arguing.
He paced heavily around the tiny cell space.
"Hey..." She started gently, stepping in the cell, trying to grab his arm but he dodged it right away.
"Don't!"
"Hey, just breathe for a second--"
"No! I'm sick and tired of all this bullshit going around. If you can't accept Merle, me and him are gonna get the fuck out. Better off fending for ourselves anyway."
"Again?"
"It's what I should've followed through the first time around!" He exclaimed, throwing his hands on the air.
"Daryl. Calm down." She said sternly, gripping his bicep.
He turned his head to her while his chest moved up and down rapidly. He took a moment to himself, staring into her eyes until his breathing got under control.
Daryl looked down to the ground and scoffed slightly, breaking free of her grip. "And what do you want? Came after me to talk about how my brother's a piece of shit, too?" He questioned, threatening tone on his voice but quieter and calmer now.
Smith narrowed her eyes at his accusation. "Are you serious?"
"Seems like it's all you people do anymore." He stepped closer.
"Do not go down that road."
"Why? Whatcha gonna do?"
"I am going to walk away." She whisper slowly, enhancing every word and keeping up with his cold gaze before leaving.
Daryl watched her leave, chewing on the inside of his mouth again.
He had made it worse. Again. The sun was going down, Smith didn't feel any sense of hunger whatsoever, with everything that was going on, a knot in her stomach began forming so she decided to simply recoil in her cell.
She sat in her uncomfortable bed, hearing Carol's voice coming from the cell next to hers.
She was talking with Daryl, saying how she hadn't had a proper chance to say she was glad he was back. They talked for a little less than a minute and chuckled softly before Smith heard her leave.
She felt bad for some reason. It wasn't just her who was hurting. Daryl was too and she decided to ignore his existence instead of helping him. Hearing Carol offering support made her feel bad about herself. It was stupid but... The inferiority complex was coming back...
