chapter 1: poison

It was early in the morning. The light of the sun was streaking inside the room. Though this scene was broken by shinobu.

Its her room, but she can't sleep in it. Her slumber was broken by her dreams. These dreams, though quite frequent, she will never get used to them.

Her heavy breathing and tear stained face are a common occurrence for her ever since her beloved sister died. 'Nee-san...' she thought as she sat up in her futon.

Her sisters death at the hands of a demon has plagued her for years, its a wonder how she can still be sane anymore...

Or is she-

The insect pillar is working on another wisteria based concoction to use against the monsters that prowl the night.

'So if i get the seeds from wisteria....it can cause dizziness, stomach pains, diarrhoea and eventually collapse. But that's for humans. I need to refine this to work against demons... probably need the flowers as well.' She smiled at the thought of watching the demon writhe in agony because of her work.

Shinobu kocho does have a sadistic streak when it comes to demon slaying. She enjoys watching the demons die because of her poison and wondering where the sudden pain came from, even if she can't cut off their heads.

'Ara ara~ i wonder how the next demon will perish... maybe from convulsions, vomiting or something much worse...'

Her musings were interrupted by a knock on her door. She turned to the door slowly her ever present smile.

"Yes, who is it?" She asked.

"Its me shinobu-sama." The muffled voice of aoi came through.

'Oh its just aoi...' she thought. "Ok anything you need aoi?"

"No but tomioka-sama is here and has asked for you." At the mention of her fellow pillar's name, her heart began to flutter and her cheeks turned slightly red.

'Tomioka-san wants to see me...but why?' She's slightly giddy with the thought of seeing him. But why? Why does she feel this way whenever giyu is voiced.

"T-Tell him that i will be there in a few minutes." She stuttered because her emotions are all over the place. Thankfully aoi didn't hear the minor stutter in her voice or chose to ignore it.

"Got it..." aoi's footsteps were heard going away from the door. Her total concentration constant was starting to become more unstable the more she thought about giyu.

'Tomioka-san is making me go crazy...' she placed a hand on her mouth as her smile got wider.

'Am i attracted to you perhaps?' She mused. She got up to go to meet him and see what he wants.

The butterfly's emotions became more sporadic as she saw the object of her affections.

He seemed to be deep in thought as he stared into space. 'He looks dumb...so why am i feeling this way?' She wondered. Deciding that finding the answer is too troublesome. She put her smile on as she walked up to him and poked him.

"𝙋𝙤𝙠𝙚 𝙥𝙤𝙠𝙚"

Giyu broke out of his trance when he felt familiar but annoying set of fingers jabbing into his back. He turned back to see the person who was doing this, granted he already knew who it was. That hairstyle and smile on her face were unmistakable.

"Ah tomioka-san~ you have finally reacted. I thought you have continued to stand there like a statue~" she scoffed at him. Her smile and words were two different contrasts, but he didn't mind. He certainly isn't going to admit this out loud, but he likes seeing her, even if all she speaks are poisonous words.

".....i have only been here for 5 minutes." He spoke finally. Her words turned spiteful.

"I'm sure you have been there for much longer tomioka-san. Anyway, why are you here so early in the morning~ do you have an injury that you need my help for?" She asked. Giyu looked at her in silent confusion. She doesn't know about the mission they have today?

He voiced his bewilderment. "Kocho we have a mission today...?" Now shinobu looked confused.

"Ara? Where did you get such information-" she got cut off when the crow called out.

"Caw!!! The water and insect pillars have to go to the master for their next mission!!! Caw!!!"

Ah. There it is. So her perpetual smiling face didn't betray the embarrassment she's feeling, which is creepy.

Instead she clapped her hands. "Oh there is the message. Ah then, i should get ready. Wait here a moment tomioka-san~" and she swiftly turned around and walked back to her room to get her things, leaving giyu by himself once more.

Sword. Check. Medical supplies. Check. Extra vials of wisteria poison. Check.

Shinobu picked up the bottle of the new poison she made this morning. She became excited because she can get the chance to use it.

'This demon will die a painful death if this works as intended.' She thought as she put it on her person.

New poison that will cause violent and painful death to demon? Check.

Now she went back to her partner. "Sorry about that tomioka-san. Lets go to oyakata-sama shall we~?" She said. Giyu nodded and they started to go.
