Chapter 4 | The First Investigation, Part Two

Makoto P.O.V.

Sayaka: "So we can't invesigate there at all?"

She looked disappointed, so I came up with a different idea.

Makoto: "Hmmm...even if we don't have the key, we should still be able to see the incinerator outside from the gate..."

Sayaka: "I suppose, but since we'll be far away from it, we could miss some evidence..."

Makoto: "I suppose that's just a risk we'll have to take."

Sayaka: "Alright then. Let's go!" 

Once we get into the incinerator room, I immediately head over to the gate in front of the incinerator, but Sayaka just seemed to be searching aimlessly around the room.

Makoto: "Hey, um, what are doing...?"

Sayaka: "I'm looking to see if someone might have dropped the key in here."

Makoto: "It's not here."

Sayaka: "Huh? How would you know that?"

Makoto: "I guess I don't...but either way it's probably a waste of time."

Sayaka: "What makes you say that?"

I sigh.

Makoto: "The killer could have quite easily tossed the key in the incinerator, to throw us off their tracks."

Sayaka: "Ah, I get it now! I suppose that does makes sense. Do you think that means they were trying to hide some important evidence over there?"

Makoto: I don't know...but we definitely should try our best to search where we can!"

Sayaka: "Alright! That's the spirit."

She gave me a smile before we turned to the gate. I'm really happy that we're friends, after all this time watching her from afar.

I peer into the gate to see the incinerator still on, however, I am quite sure it's supposed to be left off. Other than that, I notice that there seems to be something dark falling out of it.

Sayaka: "Is that some kind of...dark cloth?"

Makoto: "It seems like it's...a sleeve, maybe?"

Sayaka: "Ah! So the culprit must be someone with dark-"

She stops her sentence once she sees someone else approaching us.

Kyoko: "Hello. Did I miss anything?"

Sayaka: "Actually we just found a-"

I quickly nudge Sayaka. She gives me a confused expression, and stops speaking.

Kyoko: "So...you did find something..?"

Makoto: "Nope! Sorry, it seems like there's nothing here..."

Kyoko seemed confused, but before she could say anything, we heard an all too familiar sound.

*DING DONG BING BONG*

Kyoko, Makoto & Sayaka: "..."

Monokuma (on monitor): "Well would you look at that! The time for investigation is over students! Now, please make your way over to the room with the big red doors for the class trial! Good luck, Puhuhuhuhu~"

Kyoko sighs.

Kyoko: "So, shall we go?"

Sayaka: "You can go right ahead Kyoko, but I just wanna discuss something with Makoto first."

Kyoko: "Do as you wish, I suppose."

She was completely emotionless when she left. Well, she looked it of course. She pretends like she doesn't care, but deep down, I know she does.

After Kyoko walks away, Sayaka turns back to me.

Sayaka: "Why didn't you want me to tell Kyoko about the evidence that we found? It's not like I don't trust you or anything...but that was kind of weird."

Makoto: "I'll tell you the truth, okay? I...think that Kyoko has been going behind our backs."

Sayaka: "W-what? Why would she do that?"

Makoto: "I don't know yet...but I did see that she found evidence, and didn't tell us."

Sayaka gasps.

Sayaka: "Y-you don't think that she killed Yasuhiro...do you?!"

Makoto: "Well...we don't know anything for sure yet...but we should still be wary of the possibility..."

Sayaka: "Okay...I understand now. So, are you ready to go now?"

Makoto: "If I'm being honest, no. Sayaka, what if we get this wrong? What if we fail? I couldn't bare see anything bad happen to you..."

Sayaka: "Don't think like that. We'll be okay! I am your assistant after all."

I laughed.

Makoto: "Yeah...okay."

Sayaka: "Great! Now we better get going, we're probably making the others wait a lot longer than they should."

She turns to start leaving, but I stopped her.

Makoto: "Sayaka...I...I just wanted to thank you for being there for me. For showing hope in these times of despair. And for just...being you."

Sayaka smiles a warm smile. She leans over and...

...kisses me.
