[Millie x Dorothy]

Millie rushed towards the stairs hurriedly; her breath quickened with every step. She had heard familiar footsteps inching closer towards her, making her face flushed redder than before. She knew whose footsteps they were. It's as if the sound of the footsteps were engraved in her mind. No matter what she did, she just knew.

Millie landed on the floor with a bit of huff. She mustn't make it too obvious that she jumped down the stairs, skipping two of the steps. Weird as it sounds, her high school was deadly strict. Hair past the shoulders should be tied into a ponytail, the eyes must not be covered by the bangs, fingernails needed to be cut and cleaned, and worst of all everyone should be freaking disciplined — yup, no romance on their watch. Some managed to hide it from the school, giggling as they walked home after school. Millie would have been lucky too, only if she knew what she was feeling. After all, everyone at school only seems to have romantic feelings for the opposite gender.

"What took you so long? You're not even on duty," Karla, Millie's friend asked. She's the sister of the group. Nice and charming, she could even attract birds like Cinderella did.

"Who told their class to annoy the professor?," Valentine sarcastically answered.

"Looks like there's only four of us. Yarin has a duty this break," Karla said before they walked towards the gazebo for a seat.

Millie's eyes unconsciously scanned the surroundings. There, her eyes landed on a certain ROTC uniformed student. Millie felt her ears hot; and her breath shortened. I seem to always feel nervous looking at her. She thought. There's no explanation that she could have thought of, but she liked the feeling anyway. Millie tore her eyes away from the student officer and walked away with her friends.

They were all cadets here, and the girl she had been staring at was the officer in charge of the group she was assigned to. Millie felt giddy when she stole one last look at the officer on the corner of her eyes.

"This year will be our last year together here in high school," Karla said, with her soft voice as if missing us already.

"It's sad that not all of us passed the Domight University entrance exam. I really wanted to go there," Millie felt a tear forming on the corners of her eyes.

"It'll be fine, some of us didn't get in too. I heard they say that Domight University was accepting less senior high school students," Karla comforted.

Note: In my country, there are some universities that also provide senior high education. Some prefer to get into universities that do offer senior high, this is in order to prepare themselves before they're in college. (Junior High School=4 years of education; Senior High School= additional 2 years)

Life isn't fair at all, it never was. Millie regretted not giving her all during the exam date. Maybe if she had tried harder. Millie sighed.

"Look at the bright side, you go to the University of Very Good. It's also a good school!" Valentine said.

"I'm not even sure if I wanted to go there. My dream school is Domight University. I'd either settle for this high school of University of Very Good," Millie sighed.

"We still have months to think about it. Don't worry too much," Karla assured.

Millie hated that part of her. She worried too much. Millie smiled at her friends. That's right! I still have months. I don't have to worry about it.
