Chapter Two

The next day at school, I could barely focus on anything in any of my classes. All I can think about is what I saw last night at Tech Town. Bree and Chase are still acting like everything they did was completely normal, but I know it isn't. They're keeping a major secret from the world, I just know it, and I intend on finding out what it is. How? I'm not so sure.

At least I have study hall now. I have at least fifty minutes of quiet time to think about how I'm going to figure out what secret they are keeping. Usually, I spend this time memorizing lines or something like that, but today, I'm not going to do that. Besides, I don't have any scripts on me since no one wants to hire me for some reason. That's their loss.

I pull out my notebook from my backpack to make it look like I am going to study or work on some homework. The teacher who watches over this group of people in study hall has an eagle eye for people who don't do their work, so I need to make sure to stay on her good side while I try to figure out what's wrong with Bree and Chase Davenport.

However, before I can even start thinking about it, someone sits down in front of me. No one ever sits with me in study hall, so I'm very confused as I look at Caitlin sitting in front of me. She is in my study hall class, but I didn't think she even noticed that I am in this class with her since she has other friends in here.

"Yes?" I ask her with a frown on her face. "What are you doing here?"

"Can't I sit with you?"

"You could if you actually liked me."

She gives me a scathing look, like she just can't stand me. I guess our feelings are mutual for each other, which makes this relationship much simpler. However, if we both don't like each other, then why is she sitting with me?

"You've been acting strange all day," she finally says, surprising me. Does Caitlin actually have a heart? I never thought that was possible, but she is proving me wrong. "Are you okay?"

"Girls!" the teacher says sharply, her eagle eyed gaze landing on Caitlin and me. My cheeks redden slightly when our other classmates look at us. "You two should know that there is no talking in Study Hall. I don't want to hear anymore speaking."

"Yes, ma'am," I say, looking down at the notebook sitting on the table. Even though I do like people's gaze to be on me, I don't like getting into trouble. If it's something I can avoid, I most likely will.

"Psst."

My gaze flickers up to Caitlin, and she passes a note to me. Okay, this day is just getting weirder and weirder. Am I suddenly in a Disney movie? Because whatever is going on is basically the plot to a terrible DCOM.

In the note, Caitlin tells me to ask the teacher to go to the bathroom. After I leave, she will also go to the bathroom so we can chat. I give Caitlin a weird look, but she glares back at me, so I decide to go along with her plan. Even if she's the weirdest person in this school, she is Bree's closest friend, which means I can get dirt on the Davenport's big secret.

I raise my hand high, and the teacher makes her way over to me. Now, she has a clipboard in her hands, so she probably knows what I want to ask her. "May I go to the restroom?" I ask her, giving her my nicest smile.

"Go ahead. If you aren't back in ten minutes, though, I'll come find you."

"Thank you!"

I quickly get up from my uncomfortable seat, focusing my gaze on the glass doors at the end of the library. My feet lead me toward the doors. I could feel everyone's eyes on me, but this time, it isn't that bad. I'm an actress, I need to get used to having so many eyes on me. If my acting dream takes off, then I'm going to be in the limelight forever. I've had troubles in the past accepting that part of my future, but it's something that I have to be happy with.

I slip out into the hallway, acting like I'm heading toward the bathroom. I don't know where Caitlin wants to meet up with me, so I just walk into the bathroom, stopping in front of a mirror.

The girl staring back at me is a more mature girl than what I thought I looked like. Her dark eyes pierced mine, but her curly hair that's pulled back into a small ponytail gives her a more youthful appearance. My mom always tells me that I look exactly like her own mother did at my age, which makes me very proud. My grandmother was a small time actress , and she's the reason why I want to be an actress.

The door slams shut, and I spin around, my hands gripping the sink behind me. Caitlin is standing there, her arms crossed over her chest. "You were supposed to meet me outside of the bathroom, Maggie."

"You didn't say that in your note."

"I didn't have to. You should have known already."

Caitlin and I stare at each other for a second, the silence filled with tension. I can't believe that she thought that I would know where she wanted to meet up. It's not like we're mind readers or anything like that.

"You know something," Caitlin says, breaking the tense silence. "What's up?"

I let out a sigh and tell her what I saw at Tech Town last night. Normally, I wouldn't have told Caitlin anything, but there was something about her that made me spill everything. By the time I'm done telling her my story, she has a huge grin on her face, like she knows something that I don't. "Do you believe me?"

"Of course," she says, laughing maniacally. "Bree and Chase are bionic. So is Adam."

I blink. "Bionic? What are you talking about?"

She leans forward, glancing around the bathroom to make sure no one is in the stalls. "Once, I went over to their house, pretending that I had a crush on Adam because I suspected something was up with them. I acted like I had glasses, when I reality, I don't need glasses at all. Bree superspeeded right in front of me, but I didn't want to let them know that I know, so I ran and left. Over time, I saw all three of the Davenport kids use bionics."

"Wow. That's . . . wild."

"Yeah. Ever since then, I've been trying to get their bionics on camera, but I haven't had good luck."

An idea pops into my head. I grin at Caitlin, who gives me a weird look. "Let's work together, then. I'll get close to one of the Davenport kids and then video them using their bionics."

Caitlin wrinkles her nose. "I work alone."

"But you haven't gotten anything on camera yet. You need my help."

I thought that she would say no to me. What came out of her mouth next surprises me. "Fine. We'll work together and then show the world who the true Davenport kids are."
