It's another day of work, but fortunately for me, it's nearly time for my day to be over. Most days, I work the normal afterschool hours at Tech Town, but some nights, like tonight, I only work for a little bit. Mom made me have less hours every Tuesday and Friday night so I can do my homework and other things like that. Scott wasn't very happy when I requested that, but it's worked out thus far, so I'm not complaining.
"Tomorrow's our biggest day of the year," Scott says after telling us to huddle up, though I'm not sure why we have to be together. I'm standing next to Caitlin and across from me is Chase. I watch as he sets his phone down on the glass case behind him, an easy smile on his face. "For us techies, this is our World Series, and I'm your starting quarterback."
Oof, he totally messed up those sports analogies. I'm not the biggest sports fan and I know the difference between the World Series and a quarterback. That's why he should continue being a 'techie' or whatever he called us earlier.
"Oh, go team!" Chase says, throwing his hands up into the air. "Scott, I've studied all the specs, and I'm ready to assist any customer who needs help."
"Great, 'cause we're gonna have more people in this store than ever before. Any questions?"
Caitlin raises her hand. "Can we not do the sale?" Oh, yeah, I forgot that we're having a huge phone sale tomorrow. I'm working the whole sale hours since it's on a Saturday and I have nothing better to do with my life.
"Caitlin," Scott says, his voice sounding annoyed, "remember what I said? Think before you speak, and then don't speak." I have to suppress my laughter, or else Caitlin wouldn't want to work with me anymore. We've already had a couple of fights, so I need to be nicer to her so we can expose the Davenports.
Scott walks away, and the group disperses, besides Chase. As he walks over to us, I wonder where Bree is. I know she's not here as much as Chase, which is a bad thing. I need to get the two of them on video, and if their older brother shows up, then that's much better.
"You okay?" Chase asks Caitlin, which is weird. I don't think that they're friends in any way, shape, or form, so why is he checking up on Caitlin?
"I'm fine," Caitlin says, and then begins a ran about how she's not a fan of crowds. Right as she delves into the juicy things, she gives me a subtle wink. Oh! She wants me to snatch Chase's phone so we can try to get into it.
Chase has his full gaze on Caitlin, so I sneak away from the two of them. As I bypass the glass case, I pick up Chase's phone and shove it into my front pocket in one swift motion. And after that, I head out into the mall, distancing myself from Caitlin and Chase. I don't want to get caught by him because I want to find evidence about him being a bionic human being.
I slow to a stop next to the Pretzel Hut, sitting down at one of the tables. Many people are zooming through the mall, not paying attention to me. For once in my life, I'm glad that they aren't looking at me. I feel like that if they would look at me, they would see the guilt written on my face because I just stole someone's phone.
I slide the phone out of my pocket and set it on the table in front of me. I quickly turn it on and frown when I see that it has a passcode. Of course it would; Chase wouldn't want just anyone to search through his phone. However, there's a text from an Emmie . . . No way. That's the girl that was lost at the school last year, the same one who was kidnapped for a few days. Is that his girlfriend?
But then the text she had sent catches my eyes.
You really shouldn't video or have photograph evidence of your bionics, Chase. You're my boyfriend and I want to make sure that you don't get caught.
