"Welcome," Mr. Harley smiled at us. "To 7th grade."

I glanced at Lindsey. Her eyes were glued to the teacher.

"I'm going to be your homeroom teacher and-"

The door swung open. A boy strode in, tall and arrogant.

"I'm here!" He said. He had this cocky, confident way about him that left the class laughing.

Mr. Harvey raised his eyebrows. He picked up his clipboard and pencil and scanned down the class list.

"Name?"

"Sam,"

"I'm sorry, there isn't a Sam on here. Would you perhaps be under a different name?"

"Samuel, to be accurate."

"Samuel Wilson, why don't you take a seat next to Miss..." He glanced down at his list. "Jones,"

Oh great.

Sam sat down next to me.

"Alright, as I was saying, I'm also going to be your science teacher and lucky for you, science is right after homeroom!" Sam groaned loudly. Mr. Harley glared at him.

"I'm gonna pair y'all up and I want y'all to get to know your partner. No messing around!"

Then he paired us up. Unfortunately, I was paired up with Sam.

"So...what's your name?"

"Stevie,"

"..."

"Are you laughing at me?!"

"No! I like Stevie. It's cute,"

"Cute?"

"Yeah. Guys name on girls are cute,"

"..."

"Are you blushing?"

"No!"

"Okay then."

"So what do you like to do?"

"Play sports and sing and stuff."

"Wait, did you say sing?"

"Wha...no!"

"You like to sing!"

"No I don't!"

"Uh-huh! Now you have to sing for me!"

"Never!"

"C'mon Sam."

"Nope."

"Sam..."

"Fine."

"Yay!"

Sam took a deep breath and looked away nervously.
"Why can't we be friends,
Why can't we be friends,
Why can't we be friends,
Why can't we be friends,
I took my money to the welfare line,
And I saw you there
Every time,"

"You're amazing,"

"Shut up."

"You are."

"Class!" Mr. Harley got our attention. "You will all be meeting me in the science room after the first day assembly! Homeroom is dismissed! Head down to the gym."
