"Please?"
"Nope"
"Pleeeaasseee?"
"Never."
"Please?" I begged Minho to stay for the day, instead of having to go in the maze. Of course he refused.
"No, Maisie. As much as I want to, I have to go! I might be able to stay back tomorrow. Maybe."
I crossed my arms, keeping my head down, looking a bit to the right. I knew what his maybe meant. No. It always did. Minho sighed. He hated it when I was mad at him. Tears filled my eyes, and I gave him a quick glance.
"What are you staring at me for? Don't you have to get to your precious work?" I asked, before storming away from the hammocks, and literally walking into Newt.
"Sorry." He chuckled, before a look of concern crossed his face when he saw my facial expression, "Woah. You okay?" I shook my head.
"No." I cried, as the tears started falling down my cheeks. For some reason, I really didn't want Minho to leave today, but, why?
"Come here." Newt said, stretching his arm across my body to place his hand on my shoulder as we began walking away. I turned, and saw Minho grabbing more supplies. "Come on, talk to me." Newt bent down, with his hands on his knees. He was still taller than me, even in that position. We made eye contact, and suddenly I knew why I had that sudden urge to kiss him a few days ago. That was one of the things I always loved about Newt: He let you take your time. "Or is it a secret?" He joked. If I wasn't in this mood, I would've laughed.
I could see Minho staring at us out of the corner of my eye. But so were all the other gladers. I didn't care. I'd gotten used to it. Suddenly the sadness I felt became too overwhelming. I quickly wrapped my arms loosely around Newt's neck, hugging him as I cried. He stood up, and my feet lifted off the ground. Shushing me, Newt pulled me closer.
"Hey, you're okay... Everything is going to be okay." He assured me, shushing me again. I began whimpering, and turned my head. My eye line went just beneath his chin. I sniffled, and he tilted his head a tiny bit forwards, so he could see me better. "What happened over there?" Newt asked, making eye contact with me once again before putting me down.
"He left me!" I cried, burying my face in Newt's chest, wrapping my arms around his middle. Crap. That didn't come out right. Now I sounded like that vegetarian girl from Jurassic Park. Well, not the same pitch, but whatever. I instantly thought, and realized that Minho was leaving me. The thought of actually breaking up with him flooded my mind, and more emotion took over. He was spending more time in the maze than he was with me.
"He what?!" Newt exclaimed.
"He left me!" I repeated, grabbing a part of Newt's shirt which was right below my chin. I sniffled again, and Newt gave Minho a look of disbelief. He wrapped his arms around me, indulging me in a hug.
"I'm so sorry, Mace." He said sorrowfully. Newt kissed the top of my head, in a comforting manner, before turning his head to look at the other gladers.
"Minho left you?" Gally asked, approaching us. I nodded, sniffling once again. I slowly walked towards him, and asked:
"Can I have a hug?" I saw Gally look at Newt.
"You just got one from Newt, greenbean." He said.
"I know, but I want one from you, too." I saw the tiniest bit of red enter his cheeks.
"I guess so." He confirmed. Gally bent down, and I wrapped my arms around his neck.
"Thank you." I whispered, nestling my head between his neck and shoulder.
"Hey Gally," Newt interrupted, "Can you carry Maisie to the homestead?"
"Sure." Gally answered, following Newt. I looked up, and saw Minho staring at me, shaking his head, before running into the maze.
