Minho and I ran this way and that around the maze, memorizing every turn and dead-end we came across. We stopped for lunch only a few hours after we began running, and my legs were more greatful than ever.
"Minho?" I asked, pointing to one of the walls while chewing my turkey and mustard sandwich. "Has anyone ever tried to climb the walls?" Minho looked to me with a somewhat shocked facial expression, which only lasted a second.
"Yes. Ever wonder about Newt's limp? Gravity got the best of him." Minho continued eating. I stayed silent, as I realized that this was a sensitive subject for him to talk about.
"I'm sorry for being so... emotionally unstable all the time." I apologized.
"It's alright. In a way, I kinda like it. It makes me feel needed." Minho admitted. I smiled.
"Did you pack more sandwiches?" I asked, as I finished my first one. Minho passed me another. "So, approximately *how* many hours left do we have until, you know, we go back?"
"It all depends on how fast we can run. A few more hours maybe." Minho answered.
"I've changed my mind. I think I wanna stay a builder, now. Doing this every day, you must burn a LOT of calories. You ought to wear a fitbit." I suggested. He shrugged. "Pass me another." I motioned to the lunch bag.
"There are none. You usually eat like a bird." Minho said. I groaned.
"I *know*! I'm probably hungry because of all the running!"
"Well, get used to it, kid." Minho stood. "We should be heading back now. We still have another half of the maze to memorize on our way out." I groaned again, as Minho pulled me to my feet.
"This is a death run." I sighed.
Newt's POV
"He brought her into the maze, and now he's going to pay the price for it!" The Gally Show was going live once again. "I say we banish them both!"
"And I say we don't! Maisie is just having a harder time with her emotions, believe me, when I first realized he took her, I could've spit fire, too. Maybe she followed him in or something!" I exclaimed.
"Yeah, or maybe he decided to give her a few private training lessons!" Gally spat back. I knew he was probably right.
"One night in the pit. That's my final offer."
"One night!?" Gally repeated.
"Take it or leave it."
"I hope it's a cold night." Gally mumbled, pushing past me, and heading back to work. I looked to the maze doors, in hope of the two making it back before nightfall.
HOURS LATER
MAISIE'S POV
The sky was darkening. It was getting colder. And Minho and I had yet to escape the maze. We'd gotten lost a few hours ago, and we'd lost a lot of time.
"Come on! I can see the doors! Let's go!" Minho urged, pulling me along. A large crack, followed by the sound of odd movements encouraged me to run faster. I then realized what the sound was.
The maze doors were closing...
And we weren't going to make it...
