The genus of Australopithecus is one of the last hominins before the genus Homo finally came to be. This species is well known by the majority of Earth's human population due to a specimen named Lucy, scientifically called Australopithecus afarensis. This genus lived around 4.0 to 1.2 million years ago in the late Pliocene to early Pleistocene eras in Africa. Roughly ten species have been found that fit into the genus Australopithecus, but that number is up for debate as some professionals do not believe that certain species actually belong to this genus.
