Chapter 17: Origin
"I'm sorry, WHAT!?" Rin yelled.
Origin laughed and made a gesture. "Ta-da!"
Rin began to ramble incomprehensively at the revelation. How is this even possible!? Akasha - the goddamn Root itself - was sitting on the opposite end of the table.
But wait.
Wouldn't that mean...?
"Emiya-kun had accomplished what every Magi has dreamed to do since the establishment of magecraft, what every Magi had researched and sacrificed for over the centuries, and he didn't even know it!?" Rin yelled out her thoughts.
"To be fair, I never told him." Origin said.
*Rin Tohsaka .exe has Stopped Working*
"I think you finally broke her." Archer flat out stated the obvious.
Origin scratches the back of their head. "Well, Rin is the serious one; she always takes things at a face value."
Sakura looks around the living, noticing the absence of a certain someone. "Where's senpai?"
Origin turns to Sakura. "Oh don't you worry your pretty little head, he's fine. Shirou is in his room resting and Artoria is in a separate room."
Caster is equally surprised. She didn't think the Root would be so... laidback. "Are you really the Root, the pinnacle of all existence?"
"Yep, though you can think of the 'me' in front of you as a sort of terminal with access to all the information in the universe, or multiverse if you want to be more accurate." Origin explained.
"And Frank... what is he?" Archer asked. He couldn't fathom how someone like him could basically become, from what he can surmise, an avatar of the Root.
Origin stares at Archer for a moment. "He is, or at least was, human. A normal human soul with no relation to the Moonlit World or the supernatural in general."
At this point, Rin recovers from her mental breakdown, but now she looked like she was going to have an aneurysm. "What the hell do you mean he's normal!? The things he knows and has done clearly says otherwise!"
"I can assure you, Rin, that he is 100% human, though I will admit that he has some unique circumstances." Origin replied. "Tell me, do any of you know what happens to souls after their physical forms expire?"
"Human souls originate from the Root and return to the Root after their deaths, but souls that have committed great deeds in life are recorded into the Throne of Heroes." Rider states.
Origin nods. "An accurate summarization, however, that's different in the case of Frank."
"How so?"
"Frank's soul didn't return to the Root upon death, but rather remained stuck in the twilight of life and death; an occurrence that should not be possible." Origin said.
"The void..." Caster realized.
Origin nodded. "I'm not able to perceive time like all of you, but he has been there for a long time. A human soul cannot comprehend the primordial nothingness and come out unscathed. His Spirit Origin was deteriorating as he was slowly losing pieces of himself. In short, he was going insane." They explained. "If you asked him about his past now, he probably wouldn't be able to answer because those memories are practically gone."
