Narrator Pov:

If you looked at The Dursleys, you would see a perfect family. But nothing is truly perfect, the family had a big secret, and their fear was somebody finding out and spilling it to everyone. They didn't think they could bear it if anyone found out about the truth of the Potters.

Lily Evans-Potter was Mrs. Dursley's (formerly Petunia Evans) sister, but they hadn't met for several years. Mrs. Dursley pretended she didn't have a sister, because her sister and her husband were so non-dursley as it was possible to be.  The Dursleys shook and shuddered to think what the neighbors would say if the Potters arrived in the street.

The Dursleys knew that the Potters had a small son and daughter, but they had never even seen them. This boy and girl were another good reason for keeping the Potters away; they didn't want their son, Dudley mixing with two children like that.

When Mr. and Mrs. Dursley woke up, there was nothing about the sky suggesting the strange and mysterious things that would soon be happening. Mr. Dursley hummed picking out his work clothes as Mrs. Dursley gossiped away, fighting a dramatic son, Dudley into his high chair. None of them noticed the large brown fluffy owl flutter past the window.

At exactly 8:30 in the morning, after a big breakfast made by his wife, Mr. Dursley picked up his briefcase, pecked his wife on the cheek, and tried to kiss Dudley good-bye but missed, because he was now having a tantrum and throwing his rainbow cereal everywhere. Mr. Dursley shook his head with a smile as he left his perfect family.

He got into his perfect car and backed out of number four's drive. He noticed the first thing that was particularly odd — a cat reading a map. Mr. Dursley had stared the cat down as he drove away. He watched the cat in his mirror. It was reading the sign — no, looking at the sign; cats couldn't read.

As he sat in the usual morning traffic jam, he couldn't help noticing that there seemed to be a lot of strangely dressed people about. People in cloaks, whispering. Mr. Dursley couldn't bear people who dressed in funny clothing. Mr. Dursley was enraged to see that a couple of them weren't young at all; a few had to be older than he was.

Mr. Dursley always sat with his back to the window in his office. He didn't see another few owls swooping past in broad daylight, even though others did. Mr. Dursley, however, had a normal, owl-free morning. He yelled at many different people and made several important calls for work.

He'd forgotten all about the people in cloaks and the cat until he passed a group of them next to the baker's. He eyed them angrily as he passed. He didn't know why or how, but they made him very uneasy. This bunch were whispering excitedly, too, then he had caught a few words of what they were saying.

"The Potters, that's right, that's what I heard —" "— yes, their children, Harry and Amelia—" Mr. Dursley stopped dead. Fear flooded into him and his thoughts. He looked back at the people in cloaks as if he wanted to say something, but thought better of it. In his office, he seized his telephone, and had almost finished dialing his home number when he changed his mind.

He put the receiver back down, thinking about how he was being paranoid and stupid. Potter wasn't such an unusual name. It simply could not be them. He was sure there were lots who had a son called Harry. Now that he was thinking of it, he wasn't even sure his nephew and niece were called Harry and Amelia He'd never even seen the two. It might have been Harvey and Ava. Or Harold and Addison.

He was thinking about how when he got home, he would talk to his wife about it, when he picked up the receiver and an angry voice had started to yell. This caused him to get angry and yell back.
