It was ten in the morning when I got to the office, having to unlock the front door. This was unusual for two reasons. One, because Shisui was always there first and second, because he never locked the door once he came in. I peeked into his office, just to confirm that he wasn't there. Just when I was checking his schedule and was about to call him, the front door opened and he walked in, his hair as messy as ever. He was holding a tray with two cups as he walked towards my desk, placing one of the drinks in front of me.

"I got out of the bed with the wrong foot today," he said instead of greeting me. "I put my shirt on backwards and then couldn't figure out why my shoes felt weird, turns out I put them on the wrong feet."
"Were you drinking last night?" I asked, examining the cup he gave me.
"It's just black coffee, no sugar or milk," he explained. "That's how you like it, no?" He asked, already knowing the answer. I was surprised he remembered. "I wasn't drinking, it's just not my day today."
"Did something happen?"
"I stayed up late," he took a sip from  his own drink, burning his tongue. "See, really not my day." He sighed. "I had to finish some work and then I kept on thinking about what to give Itachi for his birthday." This was the first time in the whole week of us working together that he mentioned Itachi at all. His birthday was in two days.
"It was hard for me to choose anything too," I said truthfully. "What are you supposed to give to someone who has everything?"
"Maybe I'll just put a bow on you and call it a day." I assumed he was joking, but he didn't laugh.
"Maybe I'll put one on you too and give you to him instead of the present I bought."
"Oh?" He leaned against the desk. "I think you misunderstood me," he put down his cup and reached out with his hand, putting it on my shoulder. "I didn't say I would give you to him."
"Okay," I took his hand of off my shoulder. I could feel my cheeks getting hot, remembering what happened between us a year ago. "I can see that today really isn't going so well for you, so I'll ignore that remark."
"See, I knew we'd work well together," he straightened out his back again, walking towards his office with the drink back in his hand. "You don't take me seriously at all."

The nature of my job was very simple and things have been going smoothly. Most of the time, Shisui stayed in his office, drowning in the amount of work he had to get done, while I handled the phone calls and other documents he had no time to deal with. It was easy and straightforward. Monday to Friday, from ten in the morning till seven, although most days we both stayed behind finishing some things. He would drop me off every night, never getting out of line by doing or saying something wrong. In the whole week, he didn't invite himself to go see Itachi and as far as I was aware, they barely spoke to one another. Surprisingly, he was right. We worked well together.

As the day was slowly wrapping up, I took some of the documents I finally finished within the last hour of the shift and knocked on the double door, opening it without waiting for Shisui's answer. When I walked into the room, the lights were off and the only source of light was coming from the computer monitors. I put the papers on top of the rest on the coffee table and then noticed that he was asleep, his head on top of his arms on the desk. This was the first time I've seen him asleep at work. I stood there for a moment too long, studying his face. His hair was falling into his eyes and his lips were slightly parted. I wasn't sure what I was about to do when I reached out my hand to touch his cheek, there was no reason for me to do so. Just as I thought he was going to wake up and catch me, he just grabbed my hand and laid his head on top of it, still sound asleep. I stood there dumbfounded, listening to him breathing.

"Hey," I said quietly, "wake up. It's time to go home." I shook his shoulder with my other hand. "Wake up," I repeated, but got no reaction. I bent over him, my hair touching his ear. "Shisui, wake up." I said, gently running my fingers through his curls. I could see his long eyelashes flutter before he finally opened his eyes.
"What time is it?" He asked, his voice raspy.
"It's past seven," I replied, wiggling out my hand from under his head. He sat up in his chair, rubbing his eyes before he looked at me. "Can you manage to drive? I can call Itachi if you're not feeling up to it."
"No," he shook his head. "I can manage."
"How long have you been asleep for?" I looked over at the computer screens. "Did you even do any work?"
"I don't know," he rubbed his eyes again, staring at the screens as well. "I'll have to finish it at home again."
"You really shouldn't be taking work home every day," I said, saving the files he was working on and then turning off his computer. "You need to get some proper sleep."
"I'm doing just fine, but thanks for worrying." He got up, trying to find his phone and keys on the table. It was now fully dark in the room and neither of us could really see.
"I have to worry, I'm your personal assistant." I felt his hand on my hip as he tried to navigate around me.
"Right, you get paid to do so." As we both  tried to get out of each other's way in the dark, Shisui hit his leg against the desk. I heard him  curse under his breath just before he started to lose balance and in an attempt to catch him, I got dragged down on the floor with him.

He groaned as he fell on top of me. I wasn't sure if he was in pain or if he was simply just agitated, but either way, he wasn't getting up. Instead, he rested his head in the space between my neck and shoulder, sighing. My eyes were slowly adjusting to the lack of light and I could make out the silhouette of the desk, the chair and the ceiling fan. Shisui still wasn't moving or saying anything. In an attempt to push him away, I put my hands on his shoulders, but he didn't even flinch.
"Shisui," I said, still trying to push his body off of mine. "This is inappropriate."
"I haven't felt the warmth of another human being in a long time," he replied, not budging. "Let me have this for a minute." He lifted his head up, looking at me. "Or would you rather me do this with Itachi?" There was a moment of a heavy silence, it felt endless even though it was merely a second. It happened so fast, when he suddenly kissed me, his body pressed against mine on the cold floor.
