i ran down to the lake. i fell to my knees sobbing, rocking back and forth and i held jackson's dog tags that gene gave me, closely to my chest. 'it was all my fault ' i thought to myself. what am i going to do? he was like a little brother to me. him and mike. i had already lost mike during the cross roads along with dukeman, and now jackson.
hearing the screaming pain of the third german, i perk my head up ratherly. i looked back up across the lake seeing him lying on the ground holding his leg that had been blown off by the grenades.
snap..
i heard a stick snap behind me. i quickly lifted my gun and spun around without hesitating. i looked up from the gun and saw martin, alley, and babe. i let out a big sigh before dropping my gun to my side.
"it's all my fault" i said softly, but loud enough so they heard.
"no it's not. he ran into his own grenade. he was already up the steps before we could stop him" martin said putting his arms around my shoulder.
"it should've been me. you gave me the task to throw the grenade in the house, but i told him to do it.. it should've been me"
the three guys sighed knowing how devastated i was.
"it's all our fault. we all didn't follow to plan, you had to help us do something, so you gave jackson your duty, martin didn't give the signal in time, so i had to step in and help. it a mess all together. we all fucked up. don't blame yourself." alley said.
i gave him a small smile before looking over the lake. the house was blown up, we forgot a german, jackson was dead, alley was right. everything was and did get fucked up.
"come on, let's go take showers. everything will be okay"

after showers, we all headed into the dining area. cl. sink wanted us to go on a second patrol.
i was the last one to walk in. once i popped around the corner, i heard sighs and got disappointed looks from the guys.
they all talked to winters and spiers to keep me from going, but i wouldn't budge. i still wanted to go to make sure the boys would be okay and to finish the job right. though i lost jackson figure, i wanted to avenge his death.
"ummm, because i want you to get a full night sleep, and. i want you to report tomorrow morning that you guys made it across, but couldn't capture any germans, understood?"
i looked up at winters with a confused look, trying to remember if i got his words right after coming out of a daze.
"yes sir" everyone responded confused"
"good"
and with that he walked out with a smirk. all the guys cheered and hugged each other. i remained where i was smiling at the scene before martin pulled me into a tight hug.
"we are done here" he whispered in my ear.
"what do i write to jackson's parents?" i asked sadly.
"you tell them the truth, but that he also died a hero to help capture germans to give us information to end this war." he respond with a small smile
i nodded and looked out the window which had a perfect view of across the river. i wouldn't forget what happened here, even though it was the most tragic for me, it gives me a reason to finish out through the war.
