Kyojuro POV

I came home at last...with some broken ribs and some bruises.

I'm so happy to finally see Yuei and Senjuro. I came back just as I promised. I'm also excited to see my father.

I was walking around the house and heard a sound I haven't heard for a long time. Memories began flushing in my head as I remember my mother play her koto. It was the same sound and the same melody. I opened the door to see Yuei's back, playing the koto and Senjuro crying.

She's really just like you, mother

Tears fall down and I couldn't hide my smile. I was happy

Yuei POV

"How was the final selection?" I asked Kyojuro as I tend to his wounds.

"It was really tough. I met so many people, but only a few of us passed," He said in dismay.

"I'm glad you came back home," Senjuro smiled.

"Me too," Kyojuro said.

Kyojuro looked at me suddenly and I blushed.

"I didn't know you played koto!" He exclaimed.

"Yeah, I started playing when I was really young. My mother taught me," I smiled.

"Our mother also played the koto. I am so happy to finally hear it again after so many years. Keep playing it for us," He said as he smiled softly and I nodded.

"Hey, where's the sweet potatoes you promised!" Senjuro said and Kyojuro's eyes widened.

"I forgot hehe," Kyojuro said and we laughed.

"You're probably hungry right now, Kyo-san. I'll go cook," I said and he smiled.

1 Year Later

Shinjuro began to drink a lot more and stay in his room. He retired from being a demon slayer and the flame pillar. He distanced himself from us and even said hurtful words to Kyojuro. We never knew why he became like this. It just suddenly happened.

He got mad when he heard me play the koto. I thought he would be happy like his sons after hearing me play, but I guess it just reminded him of his late wife, Ruka Rengoku.

I trained and trained more. I tried mastering the forms of the breath of the sun. I only know up to the nineth form and I believe there were up to twelve forms.

Kyojuro has been busy with his missions. He comes back home once every two weeks to only be called again by his crow for another mission. He always brings us gifts from the villages he has been through. He gave me a snowflake hairpin which I cherish so much.

"Senjuro, I have to go to the Final Selection now," I said.

He looked at me with concern, "Come back home," he said and I nodded.

I knocked on Shinjuro's door and came in. As usual, he was there lying down with a book and alcohol bottles around him. He smelled of alcohol.

"Shinjuro-san, I'll be going to the Final Selection now," I said and there was utter silence.

"Someone like you without a master will probably die out there. You don't have use," He said and my heart hurt a little.

I smiled, "Thank you for your concern. I will be going now," I said and I went out.

Senjuro waited for me outside and asked what his father said.

"He said I would probably die," I laughed. "But I will surely come back. I promise," I embraced Senjuro as he cried a little bit.

I sent a letter to Kyojuro in hopes that it will reach him. I have to keep moving forward in my life. My goal now is to become a demon slayer and to face Muzan.

I wore the snowflake hairpin Kyojuro gave me and packed the essential things I need in my trip. A few days later, I left the Rengoku Residence.
