I was in my room sleeping peacefully, when around 3am in the morning, the loudest clap of thunder, and brightest flash of lightning I had ever witnessed, woke me up! I immediately turned my light on, scared out of my mind. Not even ten seconds later, Terry opened my door, to come get me. It was obvious that bad weather was on the way, so I wasted no time in following Terry and TJ.
"We have to get to safety, a tornado is on the ground headed right for us!" Terry shouted while we hurried to the storm cellar below the house.
Thankfully, the way TJ had it installed, we didn't have to go outside where the danger was, he had a door built into the hallway, that had a set of steps that lead down to it, and he had it dug way down below the house, so that should something happen to the house, it would protect use from the house collapsing on us.
TJ also had a generator, so if the power went out, it would come right back on, which did end up happening, and it was one of those big ones, so it would power the entire house, not just certain parts. When we got to the storm cellar, TJ kept his phone out to watch the storm as it traveled over us. I was still scared to death, I'd never been in a tornado emergency before, it was always those warnings where nothing happened.
Terry could see how scared I was, so he motioned me over to him. I walked over, and that's when he pulled me into his arms, holding me to make me feel secure. Once I got in Terry's arms, I didn't move, I was much too scared to do so. TJ kept his eye on the weather radar, watching the storm carefully.
"Looks like it's going to travel down our street across from us." TJ said, "So hopefully when we go back upstairs, our house will still be standing."
Once given the all-clear by the weather man, we went back upstairs to see what was left of our house. To our relief, our house was left untouched! However, we could still hear the quiet hum of the generator, so we knew power was still out, and would be for quite a while due to the storm. TJ tried to look outside to see what the damage was, but it was so dark outside, he couldn't see anything. Thankfully, once that storm passed, the weather man said the threat for dangerous weather had passed.
We all decided to go back to bed once danger had passed, everyone was tired enough to go back to sleep, except me, but I had no choice but to go back to my room, so everyone could sleep. I had just gotten into bed, and was ready to turn my light off, when someone knocked. I went to the door to open it, and when I did, there was Terry, looking down at me with the biggest look of concern on his face.
"You okay little guy?" Terry asked.
I was still very very scared, even though I knew the danger from the storm had passed, but when you have a fear of storms like I do, it's hard for someone like me to believe the danger was over, so of course, I start to shed tears. Terry immediately bent down to my level, opening his arms. I ran to him so he could hug me, which he did, then he made the decision to sleep with me, so I'd feel safer, and it worked like a charm. Terry got in bed with me, pulled me close, holding me the entire night while we both slept.
In the morning, I would wake up to find Terry still with me, still holding me like he had when we both fell asleep. We would also see for the first time what the damage was from the storm. What we would see, would be the most heartbreaking thing any of us had ever witnessed.
